Men’s Lacrosse Rally Falls Short Against Sailfish

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse team outscored Palm Beach Atlantic 4-2 in the last 15 minutes of play but were unable to get by Palm Beach Atlantic at the PBA Soccer/Lacrosse Field on Saturday. The Sailfish (5-7, 1-4) narrowly edged the Eagles 12-11, bringing ERAU's record to 4-12 overall and 1-5 in the Sunshine State Conference.

Trailing by four early in the fourth quarter, the Eagles played their way back into contention and had an opportunity to send the game to overtime. However, their last second attempt sailed was saved, giving the Sailfish the win.

Pete Abbes had three scores to pace the Eagle offense, while Coleman Jacobs, Christian Hofer and Joe Anderson netted two goals each.

With his two goals in Saturday's game, Coleman Jacobs made program history becoming the first ERAU men's lacrosse player to score 100 career goals.

ERAU took the game to the Sailfish in the first period, as the Jacobs/Anderson/Hofer trio each recorded a goal to stake the Eagles to a 3-1 lead.

Anderson's second goal opened the scoring in the second quarter, but a three-goal scoring run by PBA tied the game at 4-4 with 8:40 left in the period. Abbes, Jacobs and Lars Hoeg combined for an ERAU scoring run that pushed the Eagle lead back to three (7-4), but the Sailfish answered once again and cut the deficit to 7-6 at the half.

The third quarter saw the PBA defense shut down the Eagle offense and the home team capitalized on the Eagles' offensive struggles to take a 10-7 advantage into the final frame.

Abbes scored a man-up goal to start the fourth quarter, but back-to-back scores by the Sailfish helped them to their biggest lead of the game, 12-8. Abbes scored again at the 10-minute mark and Gage Poindexter's score made it a two-goal game with 4:53 left to play. With 14 seconds left, Marcus Needham found Hofer on the right side and the redshirt freshman fired a long-range shot past PBA goalie Ben Lightsey to cut the PBA lead to 12-11.

Mark Urso got one of his 16 face-off wins on the ensuing face off and had a look at the goal, but his shot went wide. The Eagles got the ball back with 1.9 seconds left and after a PBA timeout, they were able to get Hofer the ball, but his attempt was stopped by Lightsey to end the game.

The Eagles wrap up regular season play at home on Wednesday when they host top-ranked Tampa at 4 p.m.
