No. 23 Softball Drops Doubleheader to No. 6 Tampa

TAMPA, Fla - Following yesterday's 1-0 upset of 6th-ranked Tampa, the No. 23 Embry-Riddle softball team was unable to take the series from the Spartans (25-9, 13-5 Sunshine State Conference) as the Eagles (18-9, 10-5 SSC) lost 1-0 and 5-2 on Saturday at the Naimoli Family Softball Field.

It's the first time Embry-Riddle lost consecutive games since the series against Palm Beach Atlantic on March 4-5.

GAME 1 | No. 23 Embry-Riddle - 0, No. 6 Tampa - 1

Game one mirrored yesterday's contest as both starting pitchers were nearly unhittable. Mallory Kinahan and Mary Beth Feldman combined for nine strikeouts in the first three innings.

It was yet another daunting task for the Eagle offense going up against Feldman, who held the lowest ERA and opponent batting average in the SSC. Unfortunately, Embry-Riddle was unable to put a batter on base for the entire game.

Extra innings appeared to be a certainty, which would have been unfortunate considering the start time was pushed up an hour and a half to try to avoid late-afternoon showers. However, Tampa started the bottom of the seventh with a single. The Spartans' baserunner then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. With two outs, the Eagles almost got out of the jam until the next Tampa batter blooped a base-hit into center to score the game-winning run.

Despite the loss, Kinahan (6-5) performed well in the circle by limiting the Spartans to one run on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

GAME 2 | No. 23 Embry-Riddle - 2, No. 6 Tampa - 5

For the first time in the series, a run was scored prior to the sixth inning as Embry-Riddle fell behind early 1-0 after the first inning when Tampa used two singles and a sacrifice fly to take a slim lead.

In the third, the Eagles fought back to take the lead. Mahaliyah Sandridge reached on a fielder's choice, and Lia Johnson followed with a double. A walk issued to Maggie Scott prompted a pitching change, but the substitution didn't matter. ReAnne Drayton singled to tie the game, and then Johnson beat out a throw home on a groundball by Karina Ortiz-Munoz

Sadly, the lead was short-lived when the Spartans struck for three in the next half inning. Two more hits in the bottom of the fifth pushed the deficit to 5-2, which would be too large for Embry-Riddle to overcome.

Kelsi Collins (12-4) saw her eight-game winning streak snapped after allowing five runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Drayton and Johnson both went 2-for-4 at the dish. Drayton recorded an RBI while Johnson grabbed a run.

It's a quick turnaround for the Eagles as they face Flagler in the final non-conference series of the season. The doubleheader begins at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Radiology Associates Field.
