No. 23 Softball Uses Balanced Effort to Beat Lynn Twice on Saturday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla - The No. 23 Embry-Riddle softball team bounced back on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of Lynn 9-1, 7-5. The Eagles were in control for a majority of game one, while game two required an incredible late-game comeback. On the day, Embry-Riddle (20-9, 12-5 Sunshine State Conference) outscored the Fighting Knights (12-28, 0-20 SSC) 16-6 with an 18-8 advantage in hits. Half of those hits were doubles.

The Eagles improved to 17-4 in the all-time series against Lynn with a 12-1 mark at Radiology Associates Field.

GAME 1 | Lynn - 1, No. 23 Embry-Riddle - 9 (6 Inn.)

Lia Johnson was warmed up from the beginning. In the top of the first, she dove to grab a sinking fly ball in right to rob the Fighting Knights of a hit and potentially a run as a baserunner was on second.

It didn't take long for Embry-Riddle to put the scoreboard operators to work. The Blue and Gold grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Mahaliyah Sandridge started by reaching base on an error and ReAnne Drayton made Lynn pay for the mistake when she smacked an RBI single to left.

The Fighting Knights answered with a solo shot in the next half inning, but the Eagles got right back to work in the bottom of the second with two runs from a single by Isabelle Bonn and a double from Sandridge.

Following two scoreless frames, four hits, including doubles from Johnson and Karina Ortiz-Munoz, and one error helped Embry-Riddle put up a four-spot in the fifth to surge ahead 7-1.

Two more runs were tacked on in the sixth to trigger the mercy rule. Drayton doubled with the bases loaded to end the game early and give the Eagles a 9-1 victory.

Kelsi Collins (13-4) pitched lights out, especially to close the game. She limited Lynn to just one baserunner over the last three innings. The senior returned to the win column with one earned run on six innings pitched with six strikeouts.

Eight of the nine Eagles in the lineup recorded a hit, led by Drayton's line of 2-for-3 with one run and four RBI. The team's five doubles were tied for the most in a single game in program history.

GAME 2 | Lynn - 5, No. 23 Embry-Riddle - 7

Game two appeared to be trending the way of a pitchers' duel with goose eggs up and down the scoreboard in the opening three innings. Starting pitcher Mallory Kinahan was nasty in the circle racking up seven strikeouts, five on swing and misses, against the first 11 Fighting Knights faced.

Unfortunately, Lynn went yard in the fourth with a two-run shot. Then, three walks and a hit batter allowed a third run to score from a single to put Embry-Riddle behind 3-0.

Drayton reached base on a defensive miscue in the bottom of the fourth and, once again, took advantage of the mistake by scoring on Ortiz-Munozes' double.

The deficit returned to three when an error and single led to a fourth run for the Fighting Knights, but the Eagles didn't back down.

Another big four-score inning put Embry-Riddle out in front 5-4 after the fifth. The frame began with three hits from Savannah Brockenbrough, Sandridge, and Johnson. All three eventually touched home plate, with the most entertaining being Sandridge stealing home on a throwdown to second. Drayton moved the inning along with an RBI double. She concluded the scoring when she came home on a ground ball by Kelsey Kressler.

A walk and stolen base put the tying run on second for Lynn in the top of the sixth. That runner stole third and jogged home when the throwdown escaped into left field.

In the bottom half of the inning, Brockenbrough moved into scoring position with a lead-off walk and stolen base. Sandridge pushed her home with a double to center to regain the lead 6-5. A valuable insurance run was tacked on when Maggie Scott's groundout allowed Sandridge to score.

A quick 1-2-3 inning by Kinahan and the Eagle defense locked up the doubleheader sweep.

Sandridge excelled at the dish going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Lauren Latoria also notched multiple hits in three at-bats.

Kinahan (7-5) earned a season-high nine strikeouts in her seven innings of work. She allowed five runs, three of which were earned, on three hits and four walks.

Embry-Riddle plays on Sunday for the first time this season when the Eagles and Fighting Knights conclude their series with game three at noon.
