Baseball Splits with 17th-Ranked Southern on Saturday

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The Embry-Riddle baseball team played right with the No. 17 Florida Southern Mocs throughout their three-game weekend series, and the Eagles finally were rewarded in the finale when Zach Coldsnow blasted a two-run go-ahead homer in the eighth inning to lift ERAU to a 4-3 win in the second game of the day's twin bill. The Mocs (28-19, 19-8 SSC) won the first game of the day 6-3, securing the series win over ERAU (21-25, 9-18 SSC).

The Eagles will wrap up the 2022 regular season next week when they host Barry starting with a 4 p.m. game on Sunday, May 8. Prior to the start of Sunday's game, the Eagle seniors will be honored.

Game 1 - FSC 6, ERAU 3
The Mocs went up 5-1 early in the day's opener and the Eagles had to play from behind the rest of the way, making several attempts to inch closer, but the Mocs held on to win the series.

ERAU was the team to score first when Robert Post doubled home Alex Britton in the bottom of the first inning, but the lead was short-lived as Conner Berry hit a two-run homer, the Mocs' third of the series, to left, giving the visitors a lead they never gave up.

Kelsey Ward (L, 2-6) went five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on three walks with five strikeouts, leaving the game for Casey Keller who pitched the final four frames, surrendering just one run on four base hits with five Ks.

With FSC leading 5-1, the Eagles got one run back in the sixth when Post collected his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Elias Campbell, but again the Mocs quickly answered with a run in the eighth.

Aj Marinello brought in a run with a double to right center in the last of the eighth, plating Ryan Carroll, but ultimately, the Blue and Gold stranded 10 men on the bases in the contest.

Marinello finished 2-for-2, while Timo Aracena and Campbell both collected their first collegiate hits in the game.

Game 2 - ERAU 4, FSC 3
It looked like the Mocs would once again control a game from start-to-finish as they scored twice against John Barone in the first inning of the series finale, but ERAU was able to strike back quickly when Garrett Bogart scored Andrew Martinez with a single in the bottom of the first, cutting the FSC lead to 2-1.

Barone worked the next two innings without allowing a run, and J.C. Carrell entered to start the fourth, working around a two-out single to keep the score at 2-1.

Embry-Riddle knotted the game in the last of the fourth when Coldsnow scored on a wild pitch after reaching base via a throwing error and moving around the infield on a single and then balk.

Carrell pitched great for ERAU in relief, and the game moved along the middle innings tied at 2-2 as neither offense could get much going.

The Mocs were able to finally break through in the eighth, putting runners on the corners with no outs, bringing Garner Spoljaric in from the bullpen to try and put out the fire. Spoljaric did strikeout three batters in the frame, but the go-ahead run scored on a wild pitch to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

Jeremy Kennedy-Davis began the home eighth with a single to left, but after two quick outs by the next two Eagle batters it appeared as though the Mocs would take a lead into the ninth. Coldsnow stepped up to the plate and destroyed a 1-0 pitch from Brien Johnston, sending the ball out to left in no-doubt fashion, putting the Eagles in front 4-3.

Joe Balsam breezed through the ninth, overpowering the top of the FSC lineup to preserve the win and earn his 10 save of 2022.

Spoljaric (W, 3-3) got the win, while Martinez, Kennedy-Davis, and Kevin Vittoria all finished with two hits in the game.
