No. 22 Women’s Tennis Unable to Upset No. 1 Barry

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla - The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team faced its toughest opponent of the season on Friday as the Eagles (11-7, 2-5 Sunshine State Conference) lost 7-0 to No. 1 Barry at the Crotty Tennis Complex on Friday.

It was a tough matchup all around due to the Buccaneers (18-0, 7-0 SSC) boasting two of the top-6 in doubles as well as four ranked singles players, including the No. 1 duo (Daniela Farfan and Kim Moosbacher) and individual (Deniz Khazan).

The first point went to Barry when the Buccaneers claimed all three doubles matches. Jessica Wira Hadipoernomo and Mafalda Soares dropped doubles No. 2 6-0 to Helene Scholsen and Jil Engelmann.

However, Embry-Riddle fought hard in the other two doubles matches as both were 5-5 at one point. Itxaso Blanco and Carla Cabrero del Hierro were down 5-2 in No. 1 doubles but won three straight games to tie the set. Unfortunately, they fell 7-5 to the No. 6 pair of Deniz Khazan and Madeline Bosnjak to put Embry-Riddle behind 1-0.

A few moments later, Sabrina Ehrenfort and Julia Mautner also lost 7-5 to No. 1-ranked Daniela Farfan and Kim Moosbacher. The two Eagles battled and stayed within one game the entire match.

In singles action, Ehrenfort dropped a match to Bosnjak 6-0, 6-1 in singles No. 4 while Cabrero del Hierro also came up short against 39th-ranked Engelmann 6-0, 6-2 in No. 2 singles.

The match was sealed when Alessia Tripaldelli was downed by Farfan 6-2, 6-1 in singles No. 5, which gave the Buccaneers their fourth point.

No. 6 singles saw Mautner take No. 57 Mariia Skyba into a decisive third set after splitting the first two 7-5, 0-6, but she dropped the final set 10-6.

A large crowd was focused on an intense battle in singles No. 1 between No. 8 Blanco and No. 1 Khazan. Blanco dominated the opening set 6-1, but Khazan responded with a 6-2 second-set victory, pushing the match to a third and final set. Down 9-5 and on the brink of defeat, Blanco rattled off five straight points to take a 10-9 advantage. Unfortunately, she dropped the set 13-11.

Lastly, Wira Hadipoernomo and No. 46 Wang faced off in the closest match of the evening. Wang overcame a 5-2 deficit in set one to win 7-6 before Wira Hadipoernomo bounced back by narrowly taking set two 7-5. Both players couldn't create any separation in the final set until Wang scored three unanswered points to win 11-9.

Embry-Riddle still has two more road matches left in the regular season. Up next is a meeting with No. 50 Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday, April 12 at 2 p.m.
