DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - Dave Therneau is set to rejoin the Embry-Riddle baseball staff as an assistant coach following a seven-year stint at NCAA I Stetson where he served as Associate Head Coach/Pitching Coach and was named the 2018 National Pitching Coach of the Year by Collegiate Baseball. Therneau previously served as an assistant coach at Embry-Riddle from 2008-15, working with
Randy Stegall and
Chuck Stegall.
"Embry-Riddle is a special place where I have many memories and where my coaching career began," Therneau said. "When I got the call from Randy about the chance to return to Embry-Riddle it seemed right after stepping down from Stetson due to personal reasons. I'm grateful to Randy and John Phillips for the opportunity to come back and contribute to the development of these young men and this program."
Therneau transformed the Stetson pitching staff into one of the best in the nation over his seven seasons with the Hatters, developing nine hurlers who went on to pitch professionally, including Logan Gilbert, the highest drafted player in Stetson program history in 2018 when he was selected 14th overall by the Seattle Mariners.
Over the course of his Stetson tenure, Therneau's staffs posted five of the top 20 single-season ERA performances and seven of the top eight single season efforts in terms of opponent batting average. Additionally, 10 of the top 13 single season individual performances in terms of strikeouts per nine innings were set during his seven seasons.
Therneau was named the Collegiate Baseball National Pitching Coach of the Year in 2018 following Stetson's historic campaign that saw the Hatters win the ASUN regular season and tournament titles, as well as hosting and winning a NCAA Regional en route to a NCAA Super Regional appearance. Five Hatter hurlers were drafted following the 2018 season.
Therneau, a native of Denton, Texas, was a decorated collegiate pitcher at Texas Tech and Bellevue (Neb.) before embarking on a successful minor league career in the Cincinnati Reds organization.
Therneau joined Stegall's ERAU staff in 2008, working with his former minor league teammate for eight seasons in an unprecedented run with the Blue and Gold program. Therneau
departed ERAU in 2015 after helping the Eagles to a 360-135 (.727) record with seven trips to the NAIA World Series, seven Sun Conference regular season championships and five TSC Tournament crowns.
Over his 15 college coaching seasons, Therneau has seen 18 players go on to play professionally, including three Eagles and one Hatter to make Major League Debuts.
"Having Dave back at Embry-Riddle will be huge for our program," Stegall said. "Dave was with us in the beginning of our tenure here so the transition back to ERAUÂ will not be a challenging one. We consider ourselves very lucky to have hired the best pitching guy I know of in the country. It worked out perfectly for everyone involved and we couldn't be happier about having Dave back, and are excited to get this season started."
The Eagles open the 2023 campaign in Valdosta, Georgia on Feb. 3-4 when they take on Valdosta State for a three game series.
