ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's golf team shot a 298, the eighth-lowest round in program history, to hold down the third spot on the leaderboard at the end of day one of the Flagler Fall Slam. The Eagles are eight strokes behind the defending junior college champion Seminole State (290) and one shot away from No. 18 Flagler (297). Some notable competitors ERAU is ahead of include No. 3 Nova Southeastern (299), No. 16 Wingate (302) and RV Eckerd (308). Play is being held at the par-72, 6,062-yard course at the Marsh Creek Country Club.
"They Rallied," said head coach
Maria Lopez. "They started rough, but they dug in and remained confident. The greens were challenging, so patience was paramount. Confidence has to be maintained through choice and not results. That's the way of our program and more like who we are. I was super proud of their performance today."
Loa Johannsson is only two strokes off the lead in a tie for third after a season-low 71 strokes in round one. It was the first round below par by an Eagle this season. The sophomore tied for the most birdies on the team with four.
Millie Lawson also notched four birdies on the round, recording back-to-back subpar scores on two occasions. Her 75 put the graduate student in a tie for 14th.
Marybeth McGuire began her final collegiate tournament with a 76 as did Mackenzie McCormack, who matched her season-best single-round score.
Jasmine Yang (85) also competed for the Eagles.
Reni Jancsik (82) made her season debut and Savannah Hawthorne (85) made her Eagle debut, both participating as individuals.
Seminole State's Tabitha Hanely (69) led by one stroke at the end of round one.
