DESTIN, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's golf team started the 2023-24 season strong with a sixth-place result of 907 (312-299-296) strokes at the Golfweek D2 Collegiate Invite on Tuesday. It was the second lowest 54-hole team score in program history, and the final two rounds were some of the lowest ever recorded by the Eagles. The 296 on Tuesday and 299 on Monday ranked fifth and tied for eighth all time. Additionally, it was the lowest season-opening tournament ever recorded by the program.

"It was an absolutely great start to the season," said head coach Maria Lopez. "The first round was a little bit of a struggle, but they knuckled down. I'm super proud of their resilience. There were great comebacks and leaps forward for every player. To average 302 strokes for the first tournament is an outstanding start. It was so much fun to have a bunch of family travel in and get us started on the right foot. I'm looking forward to seeing what this season holds."

All three rounds were held at the par-71, 5,802-yard course at the Raven Golf Club. The field of 11 teams included No. 18 Flagler and RV Texas A&M International.

Loa Johannsson and Millie Lawson posted two of the lowest three-round tournament scores the program has ever seen, shooting a 222 (74-75-73) and 223 (80-71-72) to place tied for fourth and tied for eighth on the all-time list.

Johannsson played consistently all tournament, shooting between 73 and 75 in each round. Her team-high four birdies allowed the sophomore to shoot her lowest round of the event on Tuesday (73) to place in a tie for 14th overall. The sophomore was among the best in the 59-player field on par-5s, tying for the sixth lowest average on such holes at 4.83.

Lawson regrouped after a difficult first round to place one shot behind Johannsson in a tie for 16th with a 72 on Tuesday partly thanks to her strong play on par-3 holes that saw her record each of her two birdies on the round. Her eight birdies throughout 54 holes were the most on the team and tied for the eighth most by an individual.

In her first tournament as an Eagle, Mackenzie McCormack tallied six birdies in the event to score a 230 (76-78-76).

Marybeth McGuire saved her best for last in round three, recording her lowest score of the tournament with 75 strokes to help match her career-best tournament score at 337 (85-77-75), which tied with newcomer Jasmine Yang (82-76-79).

Competing as an individual, Stevie Albright ended one stroke behind at 338 (84-81-74), shooting a career-best 74 in round three, and Gabby Roth made her Eagle debut with a 255 (83-88-84). She ended the competition with birdies on two of her final four holes.

Flagler (289-289-279=857) easily won the tournament over Rogers State (308-290-280=878) and Texas A&M International (297-293-289=879). Montevallo (302-298-291=891) and West Georgia (305-302-294=901) finished just ahead of the Eagles in fourth and fifth.

The Saints' Stella Jelinek (69-74-66=209) was the individual winner.

Embry-Riddle takes next week off before traveling to play in the Saint Leo Invitational on Oct. 16 and 17.
