No. 16 Tampa Tops No. 18 Eagles

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Tampa won a Sunshine State Conference battle between two Top-10 teams on Sunday, topping Embry-Riddle 5-2 at the Crotty Tennis Complex in a match that lasted four hours and 17 minutes. The 16th-ranked Spartans are now 3-1 in conference play and 3-2 overall, while the 18th-ranked Eagles fall to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the league.

It took an hour for Tampa to earn the doubles point after sweeping all three contests. The first win came on court three where Aleks Topalovic and Rebecca Presley topped Jessica Christa Wira Hadipoernomo and Kaylee Kirivong 6-3. At the second spot, ERAU's Sabrina Ehrenfort and Carla Cabero del Hierro were even with Annie Wilberg and Savannah Williams 5-5, but the Tampa pair registered a hold and a break to clinch the doubles point, 7-5.

At No. 1 singles, Amaro got the better of the match-up against Blanco winning 6-2, 6-3 to increase the Spartan lead to 2-0 and Williams scored their third point with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Cabero del Hierro on court three.

The Eagles' first point of the day came from Wira Hadipoernomo at No. 4 singles. The sophomore dropped the first set 3-6 but fought back to win the next two sets by identical 6-3 scores to make the team score 3-1.

With the outcome still in the balance, the three remaining matches all went to three sets. Issler won her first set against Sanchez 6-0, but the Spartans' No. 2 player came back to win the second 6-3 and force a third. Issler went up 5-3 in the third, but Sanchez held and registered on the way to tying the set at 6-6. The tiebreaker went to Sanchez who edged Issler 7-4 to clinch the match.

Ehrenfort won a tiebreaker (7-6 (3)) in her first set at No. 5, but a 6-2 win by WIlberg in the second forced a third set. Ehrenfort won the first game of the third and didn't look back, recording the Eagles' second point with a 6-3 victory.

The Eagles' next match is at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they host Salem University at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
