DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team notched its sixth consecutive win on Saturday, downing Northwood (Mich.) 7-0 at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The win was also the Eagles third shutout of the season, improving their record to 6-6. The Wolves move to 0-10 with the loss.
At No. 3 doubles,
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo and
Fernando Alonso fell behind a break 1-2, but later registered back-to-back breaks to win their match against Max Wild and David Sedlar. The Wolves were able to level the score with Leon Grundstrom and Eduard Cabral's 6-3 win over
Alexis Guedy and
Luke Paschal at No. 1 leaving it up the match on court two to determine the winner of the doubles point. Both sides held serve until
Lukas Schneider and
Michele Iftimie earned a break to go up 6-5. The duo then broke Kuzma Zubrii and Mathis Violet in the next game to win 7-5 and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
The Blue and Gold's second and third points came in quick succession as the ERAU players on courts four and five finished within minutes of each other. Diaz Rodrigo was first with his 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Violet at No. 4 and Schneider was next following his 6-0, 6-2 win over Sedlar at No. 5.
Playing at the third spot, Alonso clinched the Eagle victory by dispatching Cabral 6-1, 6-1.
The next match to finish was on court one where Guedy held off a late surge by Wild, winning 6-2, 7-5. The final match off the court was at No. 6 where Paschal got the better of a 10-point tiebreaker, downing Heniro 6-1, 4-6, 10-7.
The Eagles return to action at noon on Sunday to host 13th-ranked Wayne State at the Crotty Tennis Complex in a rematch of last season's NCAA II National Championship quarterfinals.
