Men’s Tennis Upends No. 13 Wayne State 4-3

DAYTONA BECAH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team notched its biggest victory of the season so far, upsetting No. 13 Wayne State 4-3, Sunday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. With the win, the Eagles avenged last year's NCAA II National Championship quarterfinal loss to the Warriors (9-7) and improved their overall record to 7-6.

The Eagles started Sunday's match with a sweep in doubles play. The first win came at the third spot where Fernando Alonso and Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo downed Denari Ketayama and Joe Kelt 6-4. Trailing 3-4 at on court two, Lukas Schneider and Michele Iftimie held serve to tie the match at 4-4 then broke Dom Spicer and Luke Laws to go up 5-4. In their final service game, the ERAU duo held again to win the match and secure the doubles point for the Blue and Gold.

The match at No. 1 doubles pitted Alexis Guedy and Luke Paschal against the fifth-ranked Wayne State duo of Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey. The tightly contested match needed a tiebreaker to determine the outcome, and, in the end, it was the Eagle pair that won 7-6 (4) to complete the doubles sweep.

The Warriors quickly overtook the Eagles with straight set wins on courts three, four and six to go up 3-1.

At No. 2 singles, Iftimie won the first set 6-4, but Drenth came back to force a third set with a 6-3 win in the second. The final set saw Iftimie jump out to a 4-1 lead on the way to a 6-3 upset of the 25th-ranked Drenth for the Eagles' second point of the day.

The match at the top spot also went to three sets with Grey taking the first 6-4 and Guedy registering a 6-0 shutout in the second. Guedy rode the momentum of his second set win into the third and secured the Eagles third point with a 6-2 win.

All attention then turned to the final match on the court which was another three-set battle between ERAU's Schneider and WSU's Laws. Laws won the first set 6-3 and was up 5-4 in the second before Schneider held, broke, and held again to win 7-5 and force a third. The Embry-Riddle sophomore took care of business in the third, winning 6-3 to clinch the upset for the Eagles.

The next match for the Eagles will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday when they host Washington University St. Louis at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
