No. 33 Men’s Tennis Powers Past Wisconsin-Eau Claire 7-0

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Blue and Gold proved to be superior versus the Blugolds as the No. 33 Embry-Riddle men's tennis team dominated Wisconsin-Eau Claire 7-0 in a non-conference match on Wednesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. It was just the third-ever meeting between the two programs and the first since 1993. The Eagles (9-7) have never lost to the Blugolds (6-6).

ERAU has now won nine of its last 10 matches.

Embry-Riddle started strong by claiming the doubles point. Fernando Alonso and Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo overwhelmed Demetri Bush and John Foley 6-1 in No. 2 doubles, improving to 14-5 on the year. Pairing up for the first time this season, Michele Iftimie and Yoav Nir fell 6-0 to Ethan Wurtzel and Jared Lawatsch in doubles No. 3, which put all the pressure on No. 1 doubles for the opening point. The 28th-ranked duo of Alexis Guedy and Luke Paschal took the first three games before Hunter Roseth and Kole Kolinski battled back to make the score 3-2. At that point, Guedy and Paschal pressed on the gas and claimed the next three games to win 6-2.

In singles, the Blue and Gold faced little resistance as every Eagle won in straight sets. Iftimie, the 63rd-ranked individual, dropped only one game to his opponent, Roseth, as he notched a second point for ERAU with a 6-0, 6-1 score. The sophomore remained undefeated from the No. 2 spot (7-0).

Diaz Rodrigo had similar success versus Kolinski as the Madrid, Spain, native secured point number three thanks to his 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 4 singles.

Nir lost the opening game but proceeded to win every game from that point on as the sophomore downed Otto Schluter 6-1, 6-0 in No. 6 singles to record the winning point and earn his fifth victory in his last six matches.

No. 58 Guedy handled Bush 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles, moving the graduate to a 13-3 overall record and a 9-2 mark in dual play.

Alonso improved to 8-1 at the No. 3 spot with his 6-1, 6-2 defeat of RJ Griffiths.

For the next hour, all eyes were on Paschal and Foley at singles No. 5. It was the closest match of the day as the two went back and forth. Paschal was ahead 5-4 when Foley tied the first set at five games each. The Daytona Beach, Florida, native took the next game to go back up 6-5, but once again Foley evened the score to force a tiebreaker, which Paschal claimed 7-4. Set two was just as close, though the sophomore was able to earn some separation to win the set 6-4.

It was the fifth time in 2023 the Eagles claimed all seven points in a match.

Embry-Riddle continues its ten-match homestand with a contest against St. Olaf on Saturday, March 25 at 11 a.m.
