Softball Earns Two Walk-Off Wins on Wednesday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A bases-loaded hit batter and walk allowed the Embry-Riddle softball team to celebrate a pair of victories in walk-off fashion on Wednesday at Radiology Associates Field. The Eagles came from behind in the seventh to beat Winona State 4-3 and later edged Alderson Broaddus 6-5 in extras, the program's second and third walk-off wins of the season. It was the first time the Eagles (12-10) had ever faced the Warriors (15-6) and Battlers (3-11).

GAME 1 | Winona State - 3, Embry-Riddle - 4

A wild throw from Winona State's catcher to first started the scoring in the second inning. The ball rolled along the right field foul fence to allow Delaney Morgan to score all the way from first. With Mallory Kinahan now on third, Kesley Kressler sent a pitch to deep center to bring Kinahan in on a sacrifice fly, making the score 2-0 in favor of ERAU.

The next half inning saw a very active frame for Morgan in center. The sophomore tracked down three fly balls to leave two runners stranded.

Embry-Riddle's lead shrunk to one in the top of the fourth. Three straight singles loaded the bases for a Warrior to hit a sac fly to left and take the goose egg off the scoreboard.

In the sixth, Mahaliyah Sandridge recorded her sixth-career triple, tied for the fourth most in program history, with two outs and gave the Eagles an opportunity to earn an insurance run, but she ultimately would be left on base.

Needing just three more outs, the win was in sight for ERAU in the seventh. Two of the first three batters grounded out, although one Warrior was on second after an error, which would have been the third out. A single to center had the expectation of a play at the plate, but the ball rolled underneath the center fielder's glove all the way to the fence which allowed both runners to touch home and put Embry-Riddle behind 3-2.

But this year's Eagles are a resilient bunch, and they proved it once again in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch-hit singles from Raissa Bianco and Ashton Aycock got things going offensively. Sandridge then stepped in and lined a single to right, plating Bianco to tie the game. A walk issued to Mia Macchia loaded the bases. In a somewhat anticlimactic result, Lauren Latoria was hit by a pitch to bring the winning run home, the first win in program history on such a play.

Sandridge was hot nearly the entire game, posting three hits in four at-bats with an RBI, her six multi-hit game of the year, while Macchia went 2-for-3, her fifth multi-hit effort.

Kinahan performed superb starting in the circle. She lasted six innings and allowed only five hits and a walk for one run with a strikeout. Emma Wood (2-0) took over in the seventh and received the win. She gave up two unearned runs off of two hits.

GAME 2 | Alderson Broaddus - 5, Embry-Riddle - 6 (8 Inn.)

The Eagles struck early once again, this time it was back-to-back doubles from Latoria and Karina Ortiz-Munoz for the 1-0 advantage.

A second run was tacked on in the second thanks to a bases-loaded single by Sandridge to score Aycock.

The lead turned into a deficit in the fourth, though, as the Battlers put up four runs in the inning off of three hits, an error, a fielder's choice, and a groundout.

However, Embry-Riddle immediately responded in the next half inning. The first two Eagles, Kelsey Kressler and Aycock, reached base with singles. Katriana Bain then stepped in and sent a ball to right, deep enough for a sacrifice fly. Kerry O'Sullivan tied the game soon after with a single to center and advanced to second on a stolen base. Latoria then put the Blue and Gold ahead 5-4 with the exact same hit to plate O'Sullivan.

Starting pitcher Shelby Morse preserved the lead in the fifth. With the tying run on second, she got a Battler to whiff at the pitch for the final out.

In the sixth, Alderson Broaddus put another runner in scoring position with a walk and stolen base. The Battlers capitalized on the opportunity after a batter brought the runner home with a single up the middle to tie the score 5-5.

Offensively, Embry-Riddle was in trouble. After scoring its fifth run in the fourth, the following nine batters were retired in order until Ortiz-Munoz broke through with a one-out single in the seventh. However, she was unable to score and the game headed for extras.

Three groundouts made quick work of the Battlers in the top of the eighth. In the bottom half of the inning, Wood started with a base hit to center followed by a Bain single to left. O'Sullivan reached base on a bunt to the pitcher, setting up a patient plate appearance by Sandridge that resulted in a walk to score Wood as the winning run.

Five different Eagles tallied two hits on the game including Latoria, Ortiz-Munoz, Aycock, Bain, and O'Sullivan, which was the latter two's first multi-hit effort of the season.

Morse (3-7) went the distance, allowing five runs, three earned, off of eight hits and one walk on top of four strikeouts.

The extra-inning win was the first at home since a 4-3 eight-inning victory over Florida Southern in 2018. It was also the program's first walk-off win due to a base on balls.

Embry-Riddle is off tomorrow before playing four games over the following two days. Its next game is against Queens (N.Y.) on Friday, March 10 at 4:30 p.m. followed by a rematch with Alderson Broaddus at 7 p.m.
