Softball Takes Two From Lynn on Saturday for First SSC Series Sweep of 2023

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team secured its first Sunshine State Conference series sweep of the season by taking both games of a Saturday doubleheader against Lynn. The Eagles (21-14, 8-7 SSC) downed the Fighting Knights (17-21, 7-11 SSC) 6-1 and 5-1. ERAU held Lynn in check offensively throughout the entire series as the Blue and Gold allowed only three runs and 11 hits. At the same time, the Eagles stayed hot at the plate totaling 18 runs on 31 hits.

With the sweep, Embry-Riddle moves its winning streak to a season-high five games and improves to 21-4 all-time against the Fighting Knights, winning the last nine in a row.

Game 1 | Embry-Riddle - 6, Lynn - 1

Despite what the final score may indicate, Embry-Riddle was slow to warm up on offense. The Eagles hit into two double plays in the first four innings while Lynn edged out to a 1-0 lead from a walk and an RBI double in the first.

As the game carried on, the score remained the same until the sixth when it seemed as though the Eagles had chugged a couple protein shakes before emerging from the dugout for their at-bats.

Mahaliyah Sandrdige started the frame with a single. Two batters later, Lauren Latoria stepped in and smoked a pitch over the center field fence for her first home run in her three-year career. Base knocks from both Raissa Bianco and Emma Wood put two on with two outs when Katriana Bain also launched a ball out of the park for the first time ever to give the Blue and Gold a 5-1 advantage after the team entered the inning with a deficit.

Starting pitcher Shelby Morse retired the last six batters she faced while the Eagles tacked on another run in the seventh when Mia Macchia came home on an error from the shortstop to lock down a series victory.

Every Eagle in the starting lineup recorded a hit in the contest led by multi-hit performances from Delaney Morgan (2-for-3), Bianco (2-for-4) and Leah Oberkehr (2-for-3), her first of the season. Bain picked up a season-best three RBIs while Latoria added two herself.

Morse (6-9) went the distance and allowed one run on five hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

It was the first time since March 25, 2022, the Eagles hit multiple home runs in a game and was just the 17th time in program history.

Game 2 | Embry-Riddle - 5, Lynn - 1

ERAU carried that momentum into game two of the doubleheader by scoring twice in the first inning thanks to four consecutive hits. Sandridge got on base with a double and scored soon after on a single from Morgan. Latoria followed suit with her own RBI single, and the Eagles possessed a 2-0 lead.

Neither team threatened to score much over the next four innings, although the Fighting Knights did put two in scoring position in the fifth before Mallory Kinahan struck out the next batter to leave the two runners stranded.

The first three Eagles reached base in the sixth. Bain kicked things off with a single and Oberkehr then got on due to an error from the third baseman. Serenity Jaenichen entered as a pinch runner for Bain, and the two baserunners swiped a bag before advancing another base on a wild pitch. Now up 3-0 with runners on the corners, Sandridge popped up to the shortstop who then tossed the ball across the diamond in an effort to double up on the runner at first. Once thrown, Oberkehr raced home ahead of the tag for a fourth run. Latoria capped off the inning with an RBI groundout to third to plate Macchia.

The Fighting Knights did manage to load the bases with one out in the seventh. Lynn brought a runner in to score with a single to left center but then had two runners thrown out trying to advance on the same play. Macchia's throw went to the left of third base and was chased down by Kelsey Kressler who then threw home. Bain applied the tag to the runner trying to score and tossed it back to Kressler who tagged out a second Fighting Knight at third to end the game.

Both Morgan and Emma Wood went 2-for-3 while Morgan also notched a run and an RBI. Latoria produced a pair of RBIs for the second-straight contest. Sandridge's double in the first was her 11th of the season, tying her for the ninth-most in a year in program history.

Kinahan (12-5) received the win after tossing six shutout innings. She allowed just three hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts. Ava Domenici took over in the seventh and gave up a run on one hit and one walk.

Embry-Riddle continues on its road trip with a three-game series versus RV Nova Southeastern. Game one is scheduled for Thursday, April 6 at 6 p.m.
