Softball Drops Series Opener to Sailfish

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The threat of rain on Sunday pushed the series opener between the Embry-Riddle softball team and Palm Beach Atlantic up to Friday, and the Eagles were edged by the Sailfish 2-1 at Radiology Associates Field. Heavy showers rolled through the area and delayed the start of the contest by 30 minutes.

A majority of the scoring occurred in the first inning when PBA (14-20, 7-15 Sunshine State Conference) struck for a pair of runs off of four hits and a throwing error.

ERAU (22-17, 9-10 SSC) threatened in the bottom of the second when Mallory Kinahan and Raissa Bianco both recorded one-out singles and advanced 60 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Kelsey Kressler. However, both were left stranded.

A half inning later, catcher Isabelle Bonn erased the leadoff batter who reached base when she caught her leaning at first and picked her off with a strong throw to Karina Ortiz-Munoz.

The innings went by as neither squad could produce much at the plate, that is, until the fifth inning. Embry-Riddle got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning, which started with back-to-back hits from Leah Oberkehr and Mia Macchia. Mahaliyah Sandridge then laid down a sac bunt, and Oberkehr sprinted home all the way from second to cut the deficit in half.

With one out and Macchia on third, the Eagles were poised to even up the score, but a line out turned double play ended the team's hopes.

Oberkehr was the only member of the Blue and Gold to pick up multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a run.

Kinahan (13-7) was stuck with the loss after holding PBA to two runs, one earned, on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

The two teams return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
