Sandridge Sets Single-Season Doubles Program Record as Softball, Sailfish Split Saturday Doubleheader

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team dropped its second-straight series with a 9-5 loss and 2-1 win versus Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday at Radiology Associates Field. Defensive struggles caused the Eagles (23-18, 10-11 Sunshine State Conference) to fall into a deep seven-run hole in game one as ERAU committed six miscues. However, Mallory Kinahan and the Eagle defense stood their ground in game two, holding the Sailfish (15-21, 8-16 SSC) to one run on five hits.

During game one, Mahaliyah Sandridge notched two doubles to pass Robi Zimmerman for the most doubles in a single season in program history with 16.

Game 1 | Palm Beach Atlantic - 9, Embry-Riddle - 5

PBA tied its season high in runs with nine to lock up the series against ERAU after taking game one on Friday. The Sailfish didn't even need to record a hit in order to score in the first inning as three errors let Palm Beach Atlantic lead 1-0.

The Sailfish tacked on four more runs in the following frame with two walks, two singles, a sacrifice fly, and a fielder's choice.

Embry-Riddle eventually got on the scoreboard in the third. The shortstop misplayed a grounder by Mia Macchia, allowing her to reach base with one out. She stole second, moved to third on a ground out, and then scored on yet another error by the shortstop.

A single and double scored another Sailfish in the fourth and put a PBA baserunner on third, the perfect position to score on the team's second sac fly of the game to put the Sailfish up 7-1.

The Eagles got one back in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a leadoff double from Mahaliyah Sandridge and single up the middle by Delaney Morgan.

One half inning later, Palm Beach Atlantic reached its largest lead of the game after two singles, a double, and an error pushed the Sailfish ahead 9-2.

Down to just three outs, the Blue and Gold fought hard in the seventh as the first four batters got on base. Leah Oberkehr walked to start the inning and Macchia followed with a single to left. Sandridge then lined a double to left center to score a pair of runs. Morgan's single then brought Sandridge home to trim the deficit to 9-5. Unfortunately, that was as close as ERAU would get.

Katriana Bain set a season high in hits with three over four at-bats, ballooning her batting average from .294 to .342. Morgan and Sandridge both were 2-for-4, though Sandridge had a pair of runs and RBIs while Morgan accumulated two RBIs.

Shelby Morse (6-11) received the loss after her five-inning start. She gave up eight runs, six earned, on six hits and two walks with a strikeout. Emma Wood pitched two innings of relief and allowed one run on two hits.

Game 2 | Palm Beach Atlantic - 1, Embry-Riddle - 2

For the third-straight contest, PBA got on the scoreboard first, though this time it wasn't until the third inning. The Sailfish took advantage of another Eagle miscue to put a runner on third with one out, setting up for a sacrifice bunt that brought the baserunner in to score.

Palm Beach Atlantic threatened to add an insurance run in the fourth with a single to shallow center. The runner on first watched the ball drop and sped toward third, but Sandridge picked it up and fired it to Raissa Bianco who then tagged out the Sailfish.

Embry-Riddle grabbed its first lead of the series in the bottom half of the inning. The first two hitters, Lauren Latoria and Wood, tallied base knocks. Serenity Jaenichen then recorded her first RBI of the season with a single that went through the legs of the first baseman who was playing as shallow as halfway down the first base line, leaving her little time to react to the batted ball. Latoria scored on the play. The next batter, Isabelle Bonn, laid down a bunt that appeared as though it would bounce foul, but the catcher touched it in fair territory, and Wood ran home from third to put ERAU ahead 2-1.

Kinahan and the Eagle defense retired the side in order in both the fifth and sixth innings. However, the leadoff batter singled in the top of the seventh. Fortunately, a line out to Sandridge at shortstop turned into a double play when the junior tossed the ball to Karina Ortiz-Munoz at first to double up the runner who failed to return to the bag in time.

Six different Eagles picked up a hit in the contest, including Latoria and Wood, who both scored a run, and Bonn and Jaenichen, who received one RBI.

Kinahan (14-7) got back in the win column with her complete game victory. Her lone run allowed was unearned off of five hits and a walk with a pair of whiffs. It was her 22nd start of the year, moving her into sole possession sixth on the program's single-season top 10.

Additionally, Ortiz-Munoz advanced to third for the most putouts in a single season with 264 while Sandridge improved to fifth for most assists in a season with 82.

Embry-Riddle is back at home next weekend against Florida Southern. The Eagles and Mocs start their series at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 21.
