Mocs’ Late Rally Hands Softball Series-Opening 4-1 Loss

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A three-run offensive outburst in the top of the seventh by Florida Southern led to the Embry-Riddle softball team dropping the first game of the series to the Mocs 4-1 at Radiology Associates Field. It was the first game the Eagles (23-19, 10-12 Sunshine State Conference) ever conceded to Florida Southern (23-23, 10-15 SSC) at its home field.

Florida Southern threatened all night long, accumulating 12 hits and leaving that same amount on base.

Despite going hitless over the first three innings, the wait was worth it as ERAU's first one was impactful. Mahaliyah Sandridge started the bottom of the fourth with a four-pitch walk and was able to score from first when Delaney Morgan sent a pitch into the left center gap for an RBI double.

This came after three-consecutive frames of consistent scoring threats by the Mocs. FSC managed to put a pair of batters on base during that span, but each time Embry-Riddle was to escape unscathed.

However, in the sixth, Florida Southern started the inning with a double and notched two singles to load the bases after the first out was recorded. A pinch hitter then grounded a ball to Sandridge who quickly threw an off-balance toss to Isabelle Bonn at home for the force out. For the moment, the 1-0 lead was preserved, but it was erased one batter later on a slow-rolling single to second base to tie the game.

Morgan gave the Blue and Gold hope in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff two-bagger, but she was left stranded.

The Mocs quickly jumped ahead 4-1 in the seventh with the help of the SSC's home run leader, Kelsey Peck, when she lifted a ball over the left center fence for a two-run shot.

Morgan led the offense with two hits, both doubles, in three at-bats and an RBI. Mia Macchia and Leah Oberkehr were the only other Eagles to notch singles.

Mallory Kinahan (14-8) picked up the loss after allowing four runs on a career-high 11 hits with no walks and three strikeouts. The sophomore lasted 6.1 innings in the circle, moving her up to sixth on the program's single-season innings pitched list with 151.2 in 2023 and up to seventh on the all-time career list (255.2). On top of that, it was her 44th career appearance and 40th career start, advancing her to eighth in the program's all-time appearances list and tied for fourth in the career starts list.

Ava Domenici relieved Kinahan in the seventh and recorded the final two outs, one of which was a strikeout, and gave up a hit.

Additionally, Sandridge secured four assists at shortstop, giving her the fourth-most in a single season in program history (86) and third most all-time (153).

The two squads return to the field on Saturday for a doubleheader at noon.
