Softball Drops Series to Florida Southern

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A doubleheader split between the Embry-Riddle softball team and Florida Southern on Saturday handed the Eagles (24-20, 11-13 Sunshine State Conference) their third-straight series loss and the program's first-ever series loss to the Mocs (24-23, 11-16 SSC). After dropping the first game on Friday, the Blue and Gold responded with a 4-1 win in the opening game of the doubleheader thanks to four FSC miscues. However, Florida Southern grabbed game three 6-3.

Embry-Riddle struggled to contain the Mocs' red-hot offense as Florida Southern tallied 11 runs and 28 hits over the trio of contests. ERAU still leads the all-time series 14-4.

GAME 1 | Florida Southern - 1, Embry-Riddle - 4

The action began in the top of the third when Mahaliyah Sandridge turned an unassisted double play. With two on and one out, Sandridge snagged a line drive at shortstop and stepped on second to end the inning.

Embry-Riddle rode the momentum into the bottom half of the inning and scored two runs to take the lead. Raissa Bianco found herself on third to start the frame thanks to a throwing error from the third baseman that trickled out into right field. Two batters later, Bianco took a large secondary lead to bait a throw from the catcher that sailed over the third baseman and out into left, allowing the sophomore to score. Leah Oberkehr was then able to score on a groundout from Mia Macchia.

Another run was tacked on an inning later, which began with a base knock by Lauren Latoria. Serenity Jaenichen entered as a pinch runner and moved to third when Emma Wood sent a ball through the right side. Soon after, Kelsey Kressler laid down a bunt single, but Jaenichen was trapped between bases on the play. She was nearly tagged out by home base when the catcher fumbled a pass, which let Jaenichen touch home for a third run.

In the top of the fifth, Florida Southern threatened with a two-out single to right. A Moc attempted to travel from first to third, but right fielder Kelsey Kressler had other thoughts as she sent a missile to Bianco at third to throw out the advancing runner just in time.

Wood started the bottom of the sixth with a two-bagger and was pushed to second on a fielding error by the shortstop. Eventually, Karina Ortiz-Munoz was able to pull through with a bases-loaded RBI groundout that brought Wood in to make the game 4-0 in favor of the home team.

Florida Southern did ruin Embry-Riddle's hopes of a shutout with a run in the seventh, but the Eagles hung on for the win.

Both Kressler and Wood went 2-for-3 at the dish with the former picking up an RBI while the latter tallied a run.

Shelby Morse (7-11) added to her win column after tossing six shutout innings with seven hits allowed and three walks to pair with two strikeouts. Ava Domenici captured the final three outs but did allow a run off of two hits and a walk. The freshman also rang up a batter.

GAME 2 | Florida Southern - 1, Embry-Riddle - 4

From the get-go, the Mocs laid claim to game two of the doubleheader with a grand slam in the first inning. A trio of doubles from the first four batters in the second inning then increased the Eagles' deficit to six runs early on.

Embry-Riddle managed to string together some hits in the fourth to get on the scoreboard. Delaney Morgan recorded her third double of the weekend with a two-base hit down the left field line. Wood then singled up the middle to push Morgan in to score.

Later on in the sixth, Sandridge helped turn her second double play of the day when she fielded a grounder, stepped on second, and tossed to Ortiz-Munoz at first for a twin-killing.

All hope was not lost as the Blue and Gold cut the Mocs' lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-RBI double from Wood, scoring Macchia and Sandridge, but that was as close as ERAU would get.

Wood matched her season-best in RBIs with three over her 2-for-3 performance.

Mallory Kinahan (14-9) was given the loss for the second straight game. She was pulled in the second inning after giving up five runs on three hits and two walks. Domenici made her third appearance of the weekend and pitched a personal-high five innings. After giving up a run on two doubles to start, the freshman settled in and kept FSC to two hits the rest of her outing with a walk and two strikeouts. Wood pitched the entirety of the seventh inning without allowing a single run, hit or walk.

It was Kinahan's 41st career start, fourth-most in program history, and her 45th career appearance, tied for the fourth-most on the all-time list.

Embry-Riddle heads to Eckerd to start a series with the Tritons on Thursday, April 27 at 6 p.m.
