Softball Notches 20 Hits in Doubleheader Split with Tritons

St. Petersburg, Fla. - In the Embry-Riddle softball team's final road series of the season, the Eagles (25-21, 12-14 Sunshine State Conference) dropped game one to Eckerd 6-3 but rallied to win game two 5-3 against the Tritons (21-22, 6-20 SSC), setting up a rubber match on Friday. In over 14 innings between the two contests, ERAU recorded a total of 20 hits.

Embry-Riddle still leads the all-time series 17-3 with an 8-3 record on the road.

Game 1 | Embry-Riddle - 3, Eckerd - 6

The Eagles wasted no time building a lead as ERAU struck for a run in the first inning. Mia Macchia started with a slap hit to the left side of the infield and moved to second on a wild throw. Emma Wood sent a bloop single to right center to push the junior to third, and she scored when Lauren Latoria flew out to deep left for a sacrifice fly.

Eckerd responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs. Macchia made an excellent shoestring catch out in left to start the frame, but the Tritons used three hits and a bases-loaded walk to remove the Eagles from their short-lived lead.

EC slightly lengthened its lead to 3-1 in the second. A bases-loaded hit deflected off starting pitcher Mallory Kinahan's glove to put ERAU behind by two.

Even though Eckerd loaded the bases in each of the first two innings, the Eagles settled down defensively and retired the Tritons in order in the third.

Karina Ortiz-Munoz started the fourth with a bang by doubling to right center. Kelsey Kressler sent a shallow fly out to right, but Ortiz-Munoz decided to test the arm of Eckerd's right fielder, and the decision paid off. She slid in just before the catcher swooped her arm inches away from the back of Ortiz-Munoz, reducing the deficit to one run.

Once again, the ERAU defense recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth. With the single-season doubles record in hand, Mahaliyah Sandridge set her sights on the program record in triples as she sent a three-bagger to right field, giving her the second-most all-time in a career (9) and tied for the fourth-most in a season (4). Wood then managed to drive her home on a single up the middle to tie the contest.

The Tritons regained the lead soon after with a single and a double to the left center fence to plate a runner.

Embry-Riddle had a prime opportunity to even the score again in the sixth when Kressler started with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout. With one out, Leah Oberkehr beat out a throw to first on a bouncing groundball to third, and Kressler took off for home, but was tagged out.

Eckerd added back-to-back solo shots to start the bottom of the sixth to help end its 12-game losing streak.

All nine starting batters for the Eagles recorded a hit in game one led by Oberkehr and Wood who both went 2-for-3. Wood also had an RBI.

Kinahan (14-10) was given the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Ava Domenici was in the circle for all three outs in the sixth. She gave up a hit but also rang up a batter.

Game 2 | Embry-Riddle - 5, Eckerd - 3

Katriana Bain started game two with a bang when the freshman sailed a pitch over the center field fence in the second inning for her second home run of the season.

However, Eckerd launched its own solo shot in the third to tie the game.

A half inning later, Sandridge recorded her 18th double of the year to get into scoring position. A sacrifice bunt by Wood placed her at third, and Latoria rolled a ball up the middle to put the Eagles back on top. Later on in the same frame, Embry-Riddle loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch to Ortiz-Munoz and a walk to Bain. With Raissa Bianco up to bat, she was robbed on a liner to the shortstop that could've added a pair of runs, but instead kept ERAU to a 2-1 lead.

The Tritons again evened the score, or so they thought. With two in scoring position, An EC batter grounded a ball up the middle. Sandridge attempted to make a play on the ball at shortstop but was obstructed by the runner on second. Because of the ruling, the runner on second was called out, and the runner on third who scored was brought back to third base, letting ERAU maintain its lead.

An insurance run was tacked on in the fifth inning thanks to the reliable one-two punch of Macchia and Sandridge. Macchia reached with a single and Sandridge followed suit with a rocket of a shot that deflected off the third baseman and allowed Macchia to touch home. A double from Wood placed two Eagles in scoring position, setting up Latoria for her second sac fly of the day out to left.

Ortiz-Munoz continued the inning with a single to left that dribbled past the left fielder. Wood took advantage of the miscue to add a fifth run for the Blue and Gold.

Two singles and a walk loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but Embry-Riddle almost got out of the jam until a fielding error plated a pair of Tritons, cutting ERAU's lead down to 5-3.

That lead was inches away from being trimmed down even further in the sixth as a Triton launched a ball to deep right with a runner on, but Kinahan tracked it down and made the catch on the run at the warning track.

Sandridge paced the team offensively with her fifth three-hit game of the season. The junior also recorded two runs and an RBI in her four at-bats. She ended the day at 81 total bases on the year, tied for the fourth-most in a season in program history. Additionally, Latoria picked up a pair of RBIs with her 1-for-3 performance.

Shelby Morse (8-11) grabbed her second win in a row with her four-inning start. She held Eckerd to one run on six hits and a walk with one strikeout. Wood relieved Morse in the fifth and finished the game out, giving up two unearned ones on four hits and a walk.

The series concludes on Friday with game three at noon.
