DELAND, Fla – This weekend, the Embry-Riddle women's tennis team continued its preseason preparation at the Stetson Invitational, competing against strong teams including Murray State, Bethune-Cookman, Saint Leo, Lynn, and host Stetson. Over three days, the players competed in both singles and doubles matches.
The tournament featured a mix of challenges and standout performances for the Eagles. On day one, the doubles teams had a strong start, all securing victories against Bethune-Cookman players. In singles, five Eagles took to the court, with an impressive four clinching wins in straight sets. Mariana Cabrera emerged as the star of the day, losing only two games throughout her singles and doubles matches combined. She teamed up with Maissane Aik to defeat Zahara El-Zien and Lesa Snipes-Williams from Bethune-Cookman 6-2, before delivering a dominant performance against Keona Burley also from Bethune-Cookman, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Eager to maintain their momentum, the Eagles returned to the court early on day two. However, the doubles teams struggled to find their rhythm. The sole success came from Aik and Cabrera, who triumphed over Murray State's Megan Null and Barbora Hermanova in a tightly contested match, winning 7-6 (4). In singles, the Eagles fought hard, winning five out of eight matches. Notably, Alissia Tripaldelli, Carla Cabero del Hierro, and Laura Cuesta Bret each fought through tough three-set battles, winning their respective matches in nail-biting tiebreaks: Tripildelli at 11-9, Cabero del Hierro at 11-9, and Cuesta Bret at 13-11.
The final day of the tournament featured six Eagles in action across three doubles matches and six singles matches. Cuesta Bret and Cabero del Hierro stood out as the in the doubles , defeating Stetson's Cheri Darley and Katsiaryna Tulikova 6-4. In singles, the Eagles faced tough competition, securing only two victories out of six. Cabero del Hierro continued her strong performance, overcoming Alanna DiFrancesco from Stetson 7-6, 4-6, 10-8 for her second three-set win in two days. Cabrera also added to the Eagles' tally, winning in straight sets against Stetson's Elicia Kim with a score of 7-5, 6-1.
Overall, the Stetson Invitational was a valuable preseason opportunity for the Eagles, leaving them optimistic for the upcoming Spring season. The team will return to Deland on January 18th at 10 a.m. to take on Stetson in their first match of the regular season.
