No. 18 Men’s Tennis Suffers 5-2 Setback Against No. 9 Rollins

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The No. 18 Embry-Riddle men's tennis team dropped its first match of the season, losing 5-2 to No. 9 Rollins on Wednesday afternoon at the Crotty Tennis Complex. It was the first time since 2006 the Eagles (2-1, 1-1 Sunshine State Conference) lost to the Tars (3-0, 1-0 SSC) at home, ending an impressive seven-match win streak on their home court in the all-time series.

Embry-Riddle found itself in an early 1-0 hole after dropping all three doubles matches. Joshua Nuyts and Caelan Potts were the first to finish, losing 6-3 to Richard Stoiberer and Luke Quaynor in doubles No. 1. Safar Rasulov and Michele Iftimie fell to Guillermo Castaneda and Charlie Putrino in doubles No. 2 by the exact same score. Lastly, Fernando Alonso and Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo were ousted 6-4 by Efe Comu and Nico de Giacomo in the No. 3 spot.

Diaz Rodrigo evened the score at 1-1 by sweeping Moritz Stenzer 6-3, 6-2 to remain perfect on the spring season with a 3-0 individual record in No. 6 singles. However, Rollins claimed the match shortly after with three straight singles wins. Potts fought hard in the first set at No. 5 but was defeated 7-5, 6-3 by Castaneda. No. 31 Alonso was bumped up to the No. 3 spot for the first time this season, but he lost his bout with de Giacomo 6-3, 6-4. The clinching point then came at the top spot when Rasulov was downed in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) by Comu.

No. 27 Nuyts continued his undefeated spring with a three-set victory (2-6, 6-2, 6-2) over Quaynor at No. 2, and Iftimie and Stoiberer had the sole attention of the crowd for over half an hour at singles No. 4 as the two went toe-to-toe in the tightly-contested second and third sets. Ultimately, it was Stoiberer who won 1-6, 7-6, 7-6 to finalize the score.

The Eagles step away from conference play with a battle against Michigan Tech on Monday, Feb. 26 at 3:30 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the two programs since 2001.
