DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 11th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season in the Eagles' home opener on Wednesday. The Eagles (4-1) lost by just one goal, 11-10, to a team ranked just one spot higher in the national polls in No. 10 Flagler (4-1).
 
For the third time in four games, Eliana Enners tallied five goals and won seven draws to lead the Eagles.
 
The first quarter was marked by stifling defense by both sides with Enners' goal at the 14:06 mark representing the only score in the first eight minutes of play. Back-to-back goals by Flagler's Lexie Morton in a one-minute span gave the Saints a 2-1 edge, but scores by Caitlin Gavin and Callison Foreman put the Eagles back in front, 3-2, going into the second.
 
The second quarter belonged to the Saints who scored the first six goals of a seven-goal quarter. The Eagles' only score of the period came from Alex Zeruto who finished a pass from Enners, but at the halftime break, Flagler led 8-4.
 
Enners represented the only scorer for either side in a third quarter that was won by the Eagles. Enners scored three times in the third, while the ERAU defense, helped by two saves from Aubrey Fixen, held the Saints scoreless for 15 minutes. At the end of the quarter, the Flagler lead had been reduced to just one goal, 8-7.
 
Flagler was able to bounce back from their scoreless third to net the first two goals of the fourth and led 11-8 with three minutes left to play. Gavin caused a Flagler turnover and the ball made its way to Foreman whose unassisted score pulled the Eagles within two (11-9). The closing minutes featured a Zeruto shot that was stopped on the line and a Gavin shot that was saved by Saints goalkeeper Lauren Ribadeneira. Foreman's assist to Ava Rogala made it an 11-10 game but the Eagles didn't have enough time for an equalizer, giving Flagler the win.
 
The Eagles have little time to rest as they will host No. 7 Rollins at 7 p.m. on Friday at the ERAU Lacrosse Field.
