DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team started off the 2024 season in style, with head coach Chad Berryhill getting a 6-1 win over the Florida National Conquistadors in his Embry-RIddle debut on Wednesday.
The scoring began with Itxaso Blanco and Carla Cabero del Hierro winning 6-1 over the FNU duo of Celeste Deniz Reyes and Natalia Calvo at No. 1 doubles. Following that, No. 3 doubles pair Jessica Christa Wira Hadipoernomo and Kaylee Kirivong defeated Karina Krykunenko and Chiara Fiorenza 6-2, before the No. 2 doubles team of Laura Cuesta Bret and Maja Issler won 6-4 against Nadia Abad and Vanessa Simeone.
Cuesta Bret started off the first of five consecutive singles wins for the Eagles, defeating Simeone 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 singles position. Following this, a 6-2, 6-1 win over Krykunenko by Blanco at the No.1 added another win, before Carla Cabrera del Hierro's 6-1, 6-1 win over Abad clinched the win for the Eagles.
Maja Issler then defeated Natalia Calvo 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 2 matchup to put ERAU up 5-0, and Wira Hadipoernomo's 6-2, 6-1 win over Deniz Reyes at the No. 5 added a sixth.
The Conquistadors got one in the No. 6, where Fiorenza defeated Kirivong 1-6, 6-2, 10-8.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday, as a trip down to West Palm Beach awaits, where they'll be taking on Palm Beach Atlantic in their Sunshine State Conference opener at 1 p.m.
