DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's tennis team earned its second straight win against a Top-10 foe on Sunday as the No. 33 Eagles upended No. 8 Wayne State 5-2 at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The win also marked the Eagles' second against a ranked Wayne State (7-7) team and improved their overall record to 6-2.
The Eagles made a statement in doubles sweeping all three matches to claim the doubles point. Playing at the third position
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo and
Safar Rasulov made quick work of Josh Steele and Benjamin Hill at No. 3, dispatching the Wayne State duo 6-0.
Caelan Potts and
Fernando Alonso assured the Eagles of the doubles point with a 6-3 win over fifth-ranked Dom Spicer and Luke Laws at No. 2, and
Michele Iftimie and Josh Nuyts rallied to topple the fourth-ranked tandem of Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey 6-4 to complete the sweep.
The match at No. 2 singles pitted 25th-ranked Nuyts against No. 18 Drenth. Nuyts won the first set 6-3 and set the Warriors' No. 2 player down with a 6-0 win in the second to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
The Eagles' third point of the day came when Diaz Rodrigo downed Emil Mikkelsen 6-4, 6-2 on court six, and for the second day in a row, Potts secured the clinching point for the Blue and Gold by defeating Steele 6-1, 7-5 at the fifth spot.
Playing on court four, Iftimie notched the Eagles' fifth point with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Benjamin Hill.
The Eagles' next match will be at 3 p.m. on Tuesday when they host Midwestern State at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
