DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 33rd-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team registered its third upset in as many outings, edging No. 18 Midwestern State 4-3, Tuesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles are now 7-2 on the year, while the Mustangs, led by former ERAU Head Coach Scott Linn, moves to 4-5 overall.
The Mustangs grabbed the early lead by taking two of three matches to win the doubles point . Justin Van Amerongen and Bruno Sanchez won the first match 6-3 against
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo and
Safar Rasulov on court three and 13th-ranked Luis Diaz Argente and Stephen Slocombe assured MSU of the doubles point with a 6-3 win over
Joshua Nuyts and
Michele Iftimie. Playing at the second spot
Caelan Potts and
Fernando Alonso earned the Eagles' only doubles point of the day with a 6-3 win over Germano Setti and Killian Guilliou.
The Eagles' first singles point came on court one where Rasulov downed No. 42 Diaz Argente 6-2, 6-1. Potts made it 2-1 Embry-Riddle with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Kamara at the fifth spot.
The match on court three saw Guillio take the first set 6-2 against Iftimie. The Embry-Riddle junior trailed 4-1 early in the second but rallied to win the set 7-5 and took down Giullio 6-1 in the third to put the Eagles up 3-1.
The Mustangs got a point back courtesy of Slocombe's three-set win against Alonso, but the Eagles got the clincher at the sixth position where Diaz Rodrigo bested Sanchez 6-4, 6-2 to give the Eagles their seventh win of the year.
The Eagles will be back on the courts tomorrow for a noon match against Puerto Rico-Piedras.
