No. 33 Men’s Tennis Pulls Off 4-2 Upset of No.4 Mississippi College

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The 33rd-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team secured a massive 4-2 upset over No. 4 Mississippi College on Saturday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. It was the first ever meeting between the two programs, and the Eagles (5-2) earned their first win against a ranked opponent this season.

In doubles play, Embry-Riddle found itself in an early hole after Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo and Safar Rasulov lost their bout at doubles No. 3 6-1 to Alvaro Saint Martin and Joe Jarvis. Michele Iftimie and Joshua Nuyts earned a 6-3 victory over Rafael Sabio and Felipe Iser in the first doubles spot. Caelan Potts and Fernando Alonso then clinched the opening point for the Blue and Gold with a 6-4 upset defeat of the 38th-ranked duo of Alex Benichou Blanch and Walker Ellis at No. 2.

Singles action began perfectly for ERAU as each of the first five Eagles to compete claimed the opening set. Rasulov defeated his second consecutive ranked opponent as he handed No. 11 Benichou Blanch his first singles loss of the season 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. Then No. 25 Nuyts followed that up by suppressing Sabio 6-4, 6-1 at the second singles spot to put the Blue and Gold ahead 3-0.

Iftimie slipped 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 to Jarvis at No. 4 to give the Choctaws (7-2) their first point. Alonso seemed well on his way to topping No. 71 Saint Martin at No. 3. The senior was down 5-3 in the first-set tiebreaker when he battled his way back to win 7-5 after Saint Martin double faulted. However, he dropped the last two sets 6-4, 6-2 to trim the lead to 3-2.

Potts continued to battle Antoine Nivault at No. 5. They split the first two sets 6-4, 7-5 and went back and forth in the third set. Nivault edged ahead 4-3 when Potts went on a run to claim the next three games and capture the match-clinching point with a 6-4 third-set win.

In a battle between two undefeated players in the spring season, No. 70 Diaz Rodrigo's match against Sergio Ramirez Ocana at No. 6 was left unfinished with Diaz Rodrigo trailing 7-5, 2-5.

Embry-Riddle gets right back at it on Sunday with a home match versus No. 8 Wayne State at 1 p.m.
