NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — On Saturday, Sept. 27, the Embry-Riddle Baseball team volunteered at the Miracle League of Volusia County. This year marked the third consecutive that Embry-Riddle Baseball has volunteered for the Baseball Buddies program.

The Miracle League of Volusia County is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2015, dedicated to providing children with special needs the opportunity to play baseball. Over 13,000 children in the Volusia and Flagler counties are part of the league.

"This is the perfect organization to give back to as a student athlete," said Eric Entrekin. "Being able to help kids play the sport that we love is awesome to see."

Embry-Riddle Baseball's head coach Dave Therneau has been involved with the organization since 2012 when founder Rick Spraggins began fundraising to build a facility in the Volusia County area.

"Spraggins and I have been longtime friends, and I knew his son Sam Spraggins who kind of inspired the whole thing, so that personal relationship has sparked several other relationships to build," Therneau said.

Since the completion of the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex in 2015, Therneau has encouraged his players at Stetson and Embry-Riddle to get involved in the Baseball Buddies program.

The team shows up to the field and runs the bases with the children after they hit, plays catch with them in the field, and builds connections with the Miracle League players.

This year was Isaiah Eberheart's second year volunteering for the Baseball Buddies program.

Eberheart said, "This organization means everything to us…as Embry-Riddle student athletes, we represent something bigger than ourselves and being able to give back and help make (the kids) feel seen and valued means more than winning or losing…it is such a fun experience, and I make sure to sign up every year."

The League hosts games every Saturday from Sept. 20 until Nov. 15 at the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex, along with an annual golf tournament to fundraise for the program.
