RV Men’s Lacrosse Earns 8-7 Overtime Win in Season Opener Against No. 12 Flagler

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – RV Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse never had the lead in regulation, but they were in front when it mattered. The Eagles won a defensive battle against their rivals, Flagler, after a goal from freshman Pierce Montes won the sudden death overtime period. ERAU and the Saints were tied on four different occasions this afternoon, with the Blue and Gold using a Lucas Anthony first half hat-trick and fourth quarter comeback to force overtime. With the first and only shot of overtime, Montes scored the first goal of his career and gave the Eagles their first win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • Each goalie made a save on the first two possessions of the game, but Trace McDonald would open the scoring for Flagler exactly three minutes into the contest.
  • There was no love lost between the teams in the opening quarter, seeing a combined four major penalties called. The first penalty was against ERAU and the Saints capitalized just 12 seconds later with a man-up goal that doubled their lead to 2-0.
  • After losing the opening faceoff of the game, Embry-Riddle would go on to win nine of the next 10, leading to the 40-29 shot advantage they had throughout the game.
  • That control would finally pay off when Lucas Anthony scored the team's first goal of the game, making the score 2-1 at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter
  • Anthony continued his hot start to the game, adding his second goal and tying the game at two in the opening minute of the second quarter.
  • The Eagles would take six unanswered shots to begin the quarter after forcing the Saints in to back-to-back turnovers. They outshot Flagler 11-6 overall in the quarter.
  • Flagler would retake the lead, 3-2, halfway through the period when Brendan Oblok scored a goal in transition, coming just 10 seconds after an ERAU turnover.
  • Anthony would finish off his first half hat-trick with 2:06 left to spare. The sophomore attacker accounted for every Embry-Riddle goal in the first half.
Third Quarter
  • The Blue and Gold would win every face-off in a fast paced third quarter that saw 22 combined shots. The Eagles outshot Flagler 12-10 during the quarter, forcing Lamon into a pair of saves to begin the half.
  • However, it was the Saints who scored the opening two goals of the half. Off of back-to-back turnovers by Embry-Riddle, the Saints made it 5-3 in the first four minutes of action.
  • Flagler made it 6-3 with 4:03 left in the quarter, but ERAU would outscore the Saints 5-1 for the remainder of the game. The comeback would start immediately after the goal with Luke Barber picking up the face off and scoring just 12 seconds after Flagler's goal.
  • As a team, the Eagles picked up 21 ground balls after halftime, compared to just nine by the Saints.
Fourth Quarter
  • The teams would go scoreless for the first eight minutes of the quarter, but then there were three goals in the next two minutes. Anthony's fourth goal of the game made it 6-5 with 6:34 left in the game.
  • Less than a minute later, Trace McDonald restored Flagler's two-goal lead with his third goal of the game.
  • Tim Keefe scored his first goal of the season with 4:37 remaining in the contest, setting up what would be a fantastic finish for the 291 fans in attendance.
  • Embry-Riddle was called for a cross-check shortly after the goal, but the Eagles were able to get the stop defensively and burn off the remaining time of the penalty.
  • Back to even strength, it was Christoper Harper who scored with less than 90 seconds remaining, to tie the game at seven.
  • Barber would pick up the ground ball once again off the faceoff, giving ERAU a chance for the game-winner in regulation. The Blue and Gold would hold it for the last shot but Anthony's effort sailed high.
Overtime
  • Flagler controlled the faceoff and called a timeout to begin the sudden death period, but Embry-Riddle was able to get another much-needed stop. The Eagles gave up just one goal in the final 20 minutes of action.
  • With possession, ERAU only needed one shot to end the game. Pierce Montes would score his first career goal in his debut for the Eagles, capping off a huge win to start the 2026 season.
