No. 15 Men’s Lacrosse Falls 13-12 In Overtime Against Concordia University Irvine

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – No. 15 Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse has developed a flair for the dramatic early on in the 2026 season, but came up just short against CUI on Monday afternoon. The two teams were tied on seven occasions during the game and neither team ever built up a lead of more than two. The game would start and end with some fireworks as there were a combined nine goals scored in the first quarter and then five more goals in the final five minutes of regulation. With the score tied at 12, the Eagles would go to overtime for the second time this season, but it was the Golden Eagles who found the back of the net with less than a minute to go in the first overtime period to win the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • The game opened with a defensive stop by Embry-Riddle, followed by a Pierce Montes goal at the end of the shot clock off an assist from Leo Mileto at the 12:51 mark.
  • CUI answered less than 30 seconds later after the Eagles failed to clear and left the net unattended.
  • Embry-Riddle regained momentum after the CUI goal, winning the ensuing faceoff and holding the Golden Eagles without a shot on goal for the next six minutes. During that stretch, Mileto and Tim Keefe scored to give ERAU a 3-1 lead with 6:39 left in the quarter.
  • However, the Golden Eagles won eight of 10 faceoffs in the period and responded with four straight goals. Three came on their first shot following a faceoff win, giving CUI a 5-3 advantage with 2:39 remaining.
  • ERAU cut the deficit to one before the end of the quarter, as Montes forced a turnover on the ride and scored moments later to make it 5-4 heading into the second.
Second Quarter
  • As the game wore on, the teams started to make adjustments defensively, leading to just three goals in the second period. The two sides would combine for 23 turnovers during the second and third quarters.
  • The Golden Eagles scored their only goal of the quarter just over five minutes in when Erik Hollis made it 6-4 with an unassisted tally at the 9:31 mark.
  • Embry-Riddle was able to outshoot CUI in the quarter, in part because of Concordia going 5-for-8 on clearances in the half, including a pair of turnovers in the period.
  • ERAU was made to wait until the last minute of the half for their opening goal but Matthew Hawkins made it 6-5 with 56 seconds remaining.
  • After winning the ensuing faceoff, the Eagles called timeout and drew up a play that resulted in Keefe's game-tying goal, sending the teams into halftime knotted at 6-6.
Third Quarter
  • Jeremy Barnes, who took 13 shots in the game, had a pair of shots in the opening minutes of the quarter, with his second attempt finding the back of the net at the 10:50 mark.
  • Christopher Harper capitalized off of a CUI turnover and quickly equalized the game at 7-7 with just over nine minutes remaining.
  • The Blue and Gold regained an 8-7 lead when Montes finished off his a hat trick with a man-up goal. ERAU needed just 18 seconds of the one minute penalty for unnecessary roughness to score.
  • Embry-Riddle would get one more goal in the final minute of the quarter from Jay Kyle after he collected a ground ball off of a rebound and scored the second attempt to make it 9-7 heading to the final quarter of regulation.
  • The Eagles had a lot of success at the end of quarters, outscoring CUI 5-1 in the final two minutes of each quarter.
Fourth Quarter
  • CUI cut their deficit in half with a goal in the opening minute of the fourth after winning the faceoff.
  • The Golden Eagles would give us our fifth tie of the afternoon after Noah Pillow scored his second of the game and made the game 9-9 with 10:59 left.
  • After an ERAU faceoff win, Keefe gave the Eagles the lead back just 50 seconds after the CUI goal.
  • Montes would set a career-high with four goals after putting Embry-Riddle ahead 11-9 heading into the final five minutes.
  • Following a timeout from Concordia, they would score three goals in a 90-second span, turning their 11-9 deficit into a 12-11 lead. Their 12th goal came with 1:50 left and with a man-advantage after a holding penalty against ERAU.
  • The Blue and Gold were called for a second holding penalty with just 23 ticks remaining, meaning they would have to play a man-down for the remainder of the contest. However, ERAU was still able to force a turnover with the disadvantage and Luke Barber took the ball 60 yards down the field and tied the game at 12-12 with just seven seconds remaining.
Overtime
  • CUI opened the overtime period with possession after winning the faceoff to end the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles fired a quick shot, but Reid Kerr made the save, his 12th of the game.
  • ERAU and Concordia would turn the ball over on the next three possessions, giving CUI possession with 1:23 remaining in the first overtime.
  • Matt Carresi then created enough space to get a shot off with 59 seconds left, scoring his second goal of the game, sealing the golden-goal victory for the Golden Eagles.
INSIDE THE STATS
  • Tim Keefe's third and final goal of the game gave him 100 career goals, with 33 of those coming as a member of Embry-Riddle.
  • Joseph Bleck set a career high with four ground balls this afternoon, giving him 11 in his last four games.
