No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse Earns First Conference Win In 18-15 Victory Over No. 14 Rollins

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – No. 5 Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse battled through some poor weather and multiple lightning delays en route to an 18-15 win versus No. 14 Rollins to begin conference play. The Eagles were dominant early on the draw, building up a 10-3 lead which was enough to hold off a late comeback attempt by the Tars. Ava Rogala scored five of the six goals in the second half for the Blue and Gold, keeping ERAU ahead after Rollins had cut their lead down to two in the fourth quarter.

RECORDS:
No. 5 Embry-Riddle: 7-1 (1-0, SSC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • After controlling the opening draw of the game, Embry-Riddle also grabbed the opening goal through Eliana Enners inside the first minute. The junior midfielder currently leads the team with 29 goals this season.
  • Rollins would answer with a goal of their own within the first five minutes, but Callison Foreman put ERAU back in front after she was assisted by Ashley Albert at the 8:43 mark.
  • The Tars responded back with a goal of their own to make it 2-2 and after the goal the two teams had to leave the field for a lightning delay that lasted just over an hour with 6:39 remaining in the first quarter.
  • Following the stoppage, the game turned completely in favor of the Eagles, as they would score five unanswered goals to end the quarter, with the first of the five coming from Leah Coletti.
  • Less than 30 seconds later, Enners had her second of the game to extend the Blue and Gold's lead to 4-2 at the 5:02 mark.
  • Two consecutive goals from Caitlin Gavin put Embry-Riddle ahead by four goals within the first four minutes of resuming the game, including a free-position goal.
  • Even while a woman-down, ERAU could not be stopped, watching Jordan Davis score the team's fourth woman-down goal of the season and making the game 7-2 in the final seconds of the opening period.
Second Quarter
  • Rollins ended the 5-0 run by the Eagles when they scored the first goal of the second quarter at 13:17. However, it would not take long for Aubrey Schmidt to score her first of the evening and restore the five-goal advantage.
  • Natalie Jansky would control the next draw after the goal for the Blue and Gold, before taking the ball the rest of the way and finding the back of the net less than 30 seconds later.
  • Enners would complete her hat-trick with 9:23 still to go in the first half when she put Embry-Riddle ahead 10-3 off of an assist from Foreman who has provided 21 in the first eight games of the season.
  • There would only be two goals between the teams over the next five minutes with Molly Mendes scoring first for the Tars before Davis scored her second goal of the half to make it 11-4 and 4:22 remaining in the period.
  • Gavin became the second Embry-Riddle player with a first half hat trick when she scored the team's 12th of the game, split between two late goals from Rollins, giving us a 12-6 scoreline at the break.
Third Quarter
  • After an early penalty against the Tars, Ava Rogala capitalized with a woman-up goal at the 13:25 mark when she was assisted by Jansky.
  • Audrey Grace Mumford took advantage of a rare draw control by Rollins when she got the goal back with 12:20 still to go in the quarter and the score at 13-7.
  • Back-to-back goals by Rogala, including her second woman-up goal of the quarter gave ERAU their largest lead of the evening when they suddenly led 15-7 with 8:09 on the clock.
  • The game would go nearly seven minutes without a goal following an impressive save from Ella-Rae Cox and a couple of caused turnovers, before Molly Mendes started the late push from the Tars with two goals in the final 90 seconds, putting the score at 15-9.
Fourth Quarter
  • Another pair of goals from Rollins in the opening stages of the fourth quarter cut Embry-Riddle's lead down to 15-11 with 13:31 left in the game.
  • Ashley Albert was able to end the goalless drought for the Eagles when she found the back of the net on a free position shot. She is 2-for-2 from eight meters out this season and has 11 goals to begin her freshman season.
  • Three goals in the next three minutes, including an FPG of their own had the Tars only trailing 16-14 and over nine minutes remaining in the contest.
  • Rogala would continue her dominant second half when she won the draw control and then scored just 60 seconds after the previous Rollins goal, putting Embry-Riddle in front 17-14 with 8:07 still to play.
  • The Tars found their first woman-up goal of the night with exactly 6:00 remaining and trimmed the lead back down to two through Audrey Grace Mumford.
  • Cox would not let Rollins score again for the final six minutes, coming up with three big saves in the final stages before Rogala's fifth goal of the half sealed the game at 18-15 in the final minute.

INSIDE THE STATS
