No. 6 Women’s Lacrosse Falls 17-8 In Regular Season Finale Versus No. 8 Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – No. 6 Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse closed out the regular season with a top-10 matchup on the road, but it was Tampa who came out on top with a 17-8 win. The Eagles and Spartans were trading goals to begin the game, seeing UT lead 5-4, but a 10-0 run from Tampa was what made the difference this afternoon. Natalie Jansky recorded her first hat trick of the season for the Blue and Gold while Ella-Rae Cox also made a season-high 12 saves.

  • Embry-Riddle was ranked as the No. 6 team in the country in the most recent IWLCA Division II national poll (April 13).
  • Tampa now leads the all-time series 7-1 over ERAU. The Eagles beat the Spartans 15-14 last season in an overtime matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
  • The first shot of the game came from Ava Rogala but her effort ricocheted off the post and gave possession to Tampa. They opened the scoring on the ensuing possession through Sia Markowski at 11:52.
  • Less than 30 seconds later, the Spartans scored a woman-up goal before they eventually made it 3-0 in the first five minutes of the game. All three goals were assisted by Mary Kate Person who finished with eight points in the game.
  • ERAU would get on the board almost halfway through the quarter when Jordan Davis scored an unassisted goal with 7:34 left, bringing the score to 3-1.
  • After the Eagles forced a turnover as Tampa attempted to clear, Natalie Jansky capitalized to cut the Blue and Gold's deficit down to one at 4:52.
  • Peyton Howell immediately got the goal back for the Spartans to make it 4-2 within 45 seconds of Jansky's goal, but Callison Foreman closed out the quarter with the third goal of the game for Embry-Riddle.
Second Quarter
  • The scoring in the second quarter began with a free position goal for Tampa, but Jansky had her second goal of the game, giving us a 5-4 scoreline with 12:07 on the clock.
  • There would only be three goals scored in the final 12 minutes of the half as the two goalies combined to make eight saves in the quarter and 18 total saves this afternoon.
  • Mary Kate Person made it 6-4 before Ella-Rae Cox saved two consecutive free position shots from the Spartans but after collecting the rebound, UT scored again at 6:41.
  • At 3:54, the Spartans scored the last goal of the half, with the Eagles consistently testing the Tampa goalkeeper. The final four shots of the half were all taken by ERAU, forcing a pair of saves from Savvy Barbosa and another coming off of the post from Davis.
Third Quarter
  • Embry-Riddle had success on the draw in the third quarter but the Spartans were able to disrupt their attack, forcing the Blue and Gold into nine turnovers in the quarter, going 4-for-8 on clears.
  • The score became 9-4 after Peyton Howell picked up a loose ball in front of the Eagles' crease, seeing Howell find herself one-on-one with Cox and scoring at 9:13.
  • ERAU only gave up one goals in the first nine minutes of the quarter but Tampa scored five goals in the final six minutes to extend their lead to 15-4.
  • Three cards were given to Embry-Riddle in the final two minutes of the period, with three consecutive goals from UT being scored while a woman-up.
Fourth Quarter
  • ERAU refused to go down without a fight, scoring three straight goals to begin the fourth quarter. Eliana Enners ended the scoring drought when she found the back of the net at 12:16 to make the game 15-5.
  • The game was brought back within single-digits when Jansky finished her hat trick with 10:18 remaining in the game after a woman-up goal that was assisted by Ava Rogala.
  • Enners and Jansky continued to lead the Blue and Gold as they combined to bring the game to 15-7 with still 8:57 on the clock.
  • Person regained some momentum for the Spartans when she scored at 6:18 to put Tampa ahead by nine goals once again. Aubrey Schmidt helped win the draw for Embry-Riddle before earning a free position shot and scoring a goal of her own with exactly 5:00 left, making it 16-8.
  • The final goal of the afternoon came from Tampa as the win saw them finish the regular season with an identical 4-3 record in the SSC as ERAU, with both teams now hosting an SSC quarterfinal game on Saturday. 

INSIDE THE STATS
  • The 24 ground balls today that ERAU had today is the most they have had against an SSC opponent this season. 
  • Ella-Rae Cox finished the SSC season making at least eight saves in each game, with a season-high 12 saves this afternoon against Tampa.
  • Natalie Jansky is now the only player to have scored in all 15 regular season games. She provided at least one assist in 13 of the games and reached 100 career points this afternoon.

UP NEXT
The Eagles will begin postseason play on Saturday, April 18, at 4:00 p.m. when they play Florida Tech for the third time this season. ERAU beat the Panthers 19-10 at ERAU Lacrosse Field on February 21, before earning a narrow 11-10 win last week down in Melbourne. The winner will advance to the semifinals on Thursday, April 23.
