DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Embry-Riddle University women's volleyball hit .340 as a team to post its first Florida Sun Conference victory of the season with a 3-0 (30-8, 30-13, 30-16) defeat of Warner Southern College (Fla.) Saturday afternoon in the ICI Center.
"I thought we executed very well today," ERAU head coach Joslynn Gallop.? "We were a much different team than in yesterday's loss when we started slow and weren't organized offensively and defensively.? Today, we came out strong and controlled the match pushing the pace from the first point."
The Eagles (7-3, 1-1 FSC) certainly dictated play scoring the first 11 points off the match on the serve of freshman #Marissa Gonzales#?(Littleton, Colo.) with four aces and three kills by junior #Janelle Marinos# (Three Rivers, Calif.).? Embry-Riddle continued it strong play cruising to a 30-8?win and Marinos finished with seven kills in game one and freshman?#Jenni Nelsen# added three kills and?five digs.
Marinos finished the match with 18 kills, 11 digs and a .412 hitting percentage, while Nelsen closed out the afternoon with nine kills, 10 digs and hit .278 for the match.? Gonzales finished with 31 assists, five service aces and four digs.
The second game was more of the same after surrendering the first point, ERAU went on a?16-4 run to build a 16-5 advantage.? Warner cut the?deficit to 10 points at 19-9, but?Embry-Riddle outscored?the Royals 11-4 down the stretch to prevail 30-13.? Nelsen?posted three kills?in the game including two?in the final four points, while Marinos added seven kills and three of the final six for the Eagles in game two.
Embry-Riddle jumped out of the gate early in the third outscoring Warner 15-3 to open the game.? The Eagle defense was sharp in the third led by junior libero #Nancy Salb# (Boise, Idaho) with eight of her match-high 13 digs in the game, while Marinos added six digs and five kills, and Nelsen posted five digs.? The Eagle defense?stifled Warner Southern's attack limiting them to?a -.033 hitting percentage for the match and allowed just 16 kills.
Warner Southern (1-3, 0-2 FSC) got back into the game closing the ERAU lead to 22-14, but three kills from sophomore middle #Ashell Curtiss# (Libby, Mont.), two kills from sophomore setter #Julee Carver# (Sellersburg, Ind.) and a pair of service aces from sophomore outside hitter #Daniela Brazolino# (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) closed out the game and match 30-16.
Curtiss finished with six kills and hit .417 for the match with three block assists, Brazolino added eight kills, four service aces and 12 digs.
The Eagles hit the road for a pair of Florida Sun Conference contests at St. Thomas (Fla.) on Friday Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. and then Saturday, Sept. 17 at Florida Memorial at 12 p.m.
