ERAU Volleyball Improves to 2-1 in Florida Sun Conference Play with 3-0 Victory at St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The Embry-Riddle women's volleyball team continues to make history in 2005 recording just their second win in the history of the program?on the road against?St. Thomas (Fla.) with a 3-0 victory (30-18, 30-18, 30-23)?Friday night.

The Eagles' win also snapped a four-match losing skid against the Bobcats dating back to 2003 when the Blue and Gold recorded their first road?victory against STU (0-2, 0-1 FSC).

Embry-Riddle (8-3, 2-1 FSC) hit .260 as a team led by junior outside hitter #Janelle Marinos# (Three Rivers, Calif.)?who paced the Eagles' attack?on 19 kills hitting .279 for the match with eight digs and three service aces.? Freshman setter #Marissa Gonzales# (Littleton, Colo.) posted 37 assists, six digs, three service aces and two kills.

The Blue and Gold also received solid performances by sophomore outside hitter #Daniela Brazolino# (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and freshman outside hitter #Jenni Nelsen# (Titusville, Fla.).? Brazolino had seven kills, four service aces and five digs, while Nelsen added nine kills and seven digs on the evening.

Embry-Riddle dictated the tempo early?in the match with a 5-0 run in game one behind the serve of Gonzales?with an ace and a pair of kills from Marinos.

ERAU expanded its lead to 15-6 behind two service aces from Brazolino and three more kills from Marinos.? St. Thomas?closed the gap to 20-15 with a 9-4 run sparked by a pair of kills?from Cecilia Mason (Miami, Fla.) and?kills from Q'wando Gloudon (Trinidad & Tobago) and Vanessa Perez (Miami, Fla.).

However, Embry-Riddle regrouped and outscored the?Bobcats 10-3 down the stretch to?win 30-18 on three more kills from Marinos and she finished the game with nine.

After never trailing in the first game, ERAU fell behind 2-0 in the second, but quickly?gained control of the game?outscoring St. Thomas 10-4?behind a pair of kills?by?Nelsen and sophomore middle blocker #Ashell Curtiss# (Libby, Mont.) to take a 10-6 lead.?

Embry-Riddle expanded their lead to 21-12 benefitting from four Bobcat attack errors?and?kills by Brazolino, Marinos, Gonzales, and a pair from Marinos.? St. Thomas was unable to cut into the deficit and the Eagles cruised to a 30-18 victory in the second.

St. Thomas came out strong in the final game holding a lead midway into the match 14-11, but Embry-Riddle went on a 9-2 run to pull ahead 20-16 primarily on?seven miscues by the Bobcats?including three attack errors, two setting errors and a service error.? This helped the Eagles gain the momentum and?two kills apiece from Nelsen and Marinos, and kill from Curtiss?closed out the match 30-23.

Embry-Riddle closes out the weekend at Florida Memorial tomorrow at 12 p.m.
