Men's Soccer Wins Fifth Straight with 1-0 defeat of Gyrenes

| By:
AVE MARIA, Fla.— The 21st-ranked Embry-Riddle men's soccer team picked up their fifth straight Saturday night defeating the Ave Maria Gyrenes, 1-0 at Ave Maria Field.  The Eagles (10-3-1, 6-1-0) dominated the pitch against the Gyrenes (4-7-1, 1-5-1) throughout the entire match, but were only able to come away with one first half goal to come away with the victory.

Embry-Riddle controlled the majority of the offensive possession in the first half; however they didn't find the back of the net until the 44th minute of play. The Eagles struck when Anel Coralic sent a ball that found senior Michael Donald streaking in the middle of the pitch. Donald gathered the ball and ripped a shot towards Andres Martin, the Ave Maria goalkeeper, but it was deflected. Luckily for ERAU, Nicklas Petersson collected the rebound and put it in the bottom right corner to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles fired 12 shots in the first half to the Gyrenes' one, bested them in corner kicks 8-2, and went into the locker room with a one goal advantage.

Play was sluggish in the early parts of the second half as neither team was able to threaten with many chances to score. Nonetheless, the Eagles still dominated offensive possession and were able to make good runs on the AMU defense, but saves by Martin kept the Eagles from finishing any goal scoring opportunities.

Ave Maria struggled to pressure keeper Nils Carlson and the Eagle defense only having two shots in the second half, none of which were on goal. The Eagles on the other hand were consistently on the Gyrenes' side of the pitch totaling 21 shots on the night, nine of which were on goal.

The 1-0 victory gave Carlson, the reigning Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week,  his seventh clean sheet on the year and put the Eagles in double digits in the win column for the 13th time in school history.

The Eagle men will be back in action on Monday when they take on Sun Conference rival SCAD Savannah in Daytona Beach at 7 p.m. The game between the Bees and the Eagles is a make-up from the match that was rained out on Oct. 8.
