DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team notched its 10th win of the season on Wednesday by virtue of a 76-69 decision against Voorhees in the finale of the 2012 Bahama House Classic. Senior
Ray Graham finished with a game-high 21 points and
DeForest Carter contributed 14 points to help the Eagles, who have now won six in a row, improve their overall record to 10-5.
Voorhees was the first to get on the board as the Tigers' leading scorer Garland McArthur tallied his only two points of the half on a jumper.
Sam Ford answered with a put-back on a Graham miss to tie the score at 2-2 and that back-and-forth action typified play in the first 10 minutes of the half which featured seven ties and seven lead changes.
The Tigers shot 43.6 percent from the field and the Eagles had a 42.3 percent field goal percentage, but while Voorhees made just two of their 10 shots from long range, ERAU was 6-of-13 from beyond the arc. Voorhees managed to outdo the Eagles 24-14 on the boards, but the Eagles created more chances to score from the charity stripe, connecting on 13 of their 15 free throws, compared to just 4-of-5 by the Tigers.
The Eagles' first-half offense was powered by 12 points from
Daniel Mondragon whose second three-pointer of the night reclaimed a two-point lead for ERAU. The junior's third trey was part of an 8-0 run that gave the Blue and Gold its biggest lead of the half (29-23) at the 8:17 mark.
ERAU remained in front of the Tigers until the three-minute mark when a basket and a free throw by Andre Datcher capped an 8-3 run that knotted the score at 34-34. The half ended the way it began, with both teams trading baskets and when the buzzer sounded signifying the end of the half it was ERAU that held a 41-40 lead.
The Voorhees offense struggled to get things going to start the second half and the Eagles took advantage of the visitors' misfortune, rattling off 11 unanswered points in the first four minutes to increase their lead to 11 (51-40). At the 14:25 mark, the Tigers had managed just four points and all of those came from the free throw line, but Voorhees' first basket of the half from McArthur was a turning point for the Tigers who went on a 14-4 run to claw their way back into the game and eventually took a one-point lead (58-57) with 8:33 left to play.
After leveling the score at 58-58 from the charity stripe, Carter stripped Tiger guard Henry Johnson and raced to the basket for an uncontested layup. That play was the start of another run that saw Graham and Carter combine for the Eagles' next seven points, which allowed the Blue and Gold to build its lead back up to nine points (67-58) with 6:12 remaining in the contest.
Once again, Voorhees tried to battle its way back into contention and a Brandon Coleman three pulled the Tigers within four.
Billy Serle answered with a three of his own and the Eagles made free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Mondragon, who was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc, finished with a career-high 12 points and led all players on the floor with four assists to go with four rebounds on the night.
Sam Ford also scored in double figures with 11 points and had seven rebounds and two blocks.
William Waters III was the high scorer for the Tigers with 14 points. McArthur finished with 12 points and eight boards as Voorhees falls to 9-5 on the year.
The Eagles will play their final game before resuming Sun Conference play on Saturday when they host McKendree at the ICI Center at 7 p.m. McKendree is coached by Harry Statham who is the all-time wins leader in men's college basketball history at the four-year level with 1,053 victories in 46 seasons.
