AT A GLANCE
The Eagles travel to Montana to take on two NAIA I opponents beginning with the Orediggers of Montana Tech. The Eagles will look to hand the Orediggers their first loss of the season at the Carroll College Classic. Embry-Riddle's lone loss came to NAIA II No. 11 Davenport in the championship game of the Daytona Mitsubishi/Kia Shootout.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The matchup between ERAU's DeForest Carter and Montana Tech's Bryan Bock should be a good one. Both guards lead their team in scoring and in several other categories, including rebounding (Carter - 5.3), Assists (Carter 6.5, Bock 5.0) and Steals (Carter 3.0, Bock 1.0). Bock is a junior from Rialto, Calif. that had his sophomore campaign cut short due to an injury, while Carter is in his second year with the Eagles.
SCOUTING MONTANA TECH
The Orediggers are 3-0 on the young season, winning a pair of close games to open the campaing against South Dakota Tech (78-68) and Corban (Ore.) (75-70) before blowing out Evergreen State (Wash.) (74-54) last Saturday.
Last season, Montana Tech finished 11-15 overall and 3-11 in the Frontier Conference, falling in the first round of the conference tournament to Montana State-Northern. Aaron Wilczko is in his third season at MT, hoping third time's the charm after compiling a 17-37 record in his first two seasons.
Similarly to the Eagles, the Orediggers have used defense to overpower opponents in the early going of 2012. The three teams Montana Tech has downed have averaged just over 39 percent from the floor and a paltry 29.9 percent from beyond the arc.
Conversely, the Orediggers are shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and a scorching 42 percent from downtown. Three players average in double-figures, led by Bock's 16.3, Adam Greger's 12.0 and Daniel Simon's 10.7.
LAST GAME: Embry-Riddle Handles DeVry, 97-39
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle Eagles are in their 25th year of intercollegiate competition and on Tuesday night hosted a squad in their very first regular season campaign. The Eagles had no problem with DeVry (Miramar, Fla.), handing the Skyhawks a 97-39 setback in the ICI Center. The Blue and Gold moved to 3-1 while DeVry sliped to 0-6.
BIG TIME EXHIBITION
The Orediggers traveled to Pacatello, Idaho to take on NCAA I Idaho State earlier this season, falling 71-41 to the Tigers. Montana Tech was without the services of a pair of big men in Simon and Quinn Smith, but freshmen Danny Hebert and Nathan Smith filled in and lead MT with eight points each.
.500 AGAINST BIG SKY COUNTRY
The Eagles have played just two opponents from the state of Montana, recording a 2-2 record overall. Embry-Riddle is 2-1 against Carroll, the host of this weekend's tournament and 0-1 versus Montana Western. Both of the Blue and Gold's opponents at the Carroll College Classic are from Montana.
FREE THROW TROUBLES
Both the Eagles and Orediggers need improvement in one area: free throw shooting. The two teams average just 66 percent from the charity stripe, getting to the line an average of 22.2 (ERAU) and 31.7 (MT) times per game.
PERFECT NIGHT FOR A CAREER-HIGH
Ben Redfield got the second start of his career in Tuesday night's win over visiting DeVry (Miramar, Fla.), and the senior from Red Bluff, Calif. made the most of it, scoring a career-high 14 points on a perfect 5-of-5 night from the floor, including 4-of-4 from three. Redfield also grabbed a pair of rebounds and dished out two assists in the 97-39 romp over the Skyhawks.
HIGH PERCENTAGE...BUT NOT THE HIGHEST
Currently, the Eagles average over 51 percent from the field, good for 6th in the country. However, the Embry-Riddle record for field goal percentage in a season is 54.2 percent set in 1994-95. That clip led the NAIA, but even that was not as good as Maine-Machias' 58.8 percent field goal percentage during the 1991-92 season.
QUARTER CENTURY OF EAGLE BASKETBALL
The 2012-13 season marks the 25th edition of Eagle basketball and Embry-Riddle athletics overall. The basketball, baseball, men's tennis and men's golf programs began in the 1988-89 academic year and were the foundation the rest of the department was built upon.
Embry-Riddle is 558-235 in 24 seasons, capturing eight conference regular season titles, nine conference tournament titles, claiming 17 NAIA All-America honors, 15 Honorable Mention All-American honors and reaching the pinnacle of NAIA basketball in 2000 when the Eagles won the NAIA II National Championship.
