DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The third-ranked Embry-Riddle women's tennis team continued to successfully defend its 2011 Sun Conference regular season title with a 9-0 defeat of Southeastern, Friday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles, now 4-1 overall, top the league at 3-0, while the Fire drops to 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in conference play.
The Eagles surrendered just two games in doubles play, registering shutouts at the top two doubles spots.
Yi Ching Chen and
Josefine Strom bested Chelsey Lynn and Wendy Reade at No. 1 and
Kristina Marova and
Paola Montero downed Kristen Wisor and Stephanie Dodd at No. 2. Playing in their first dual match of the year,
Elise Lagerstrom and
Landyn Scudder bested Lexus Potts and Heather Erskin at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep.
Singles play saw a few shifts in the Eagles' regular lineup. Chen maintained her No. 1 position and blanked Lynn 6-0, 6-0. Marova moved up two spots to No. 2 to top Reade 6-1, 6-1 as did Strom (6-2, 6-0) and Montero (6-0, 6-1), who notched wins at the third and fourth positions, respectively.
Friday was also the first dual match singles competition for Scudder and Lagerstrom. Scudder topped Potts 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 and Lagerstrom downed Erksin 6-0, 6-1 to score the clincher.
The Eagles will be back in action at 10 a.m. on Sunday when they host conference rival SCAD Savannah at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
