Women’s Tennis Falls to Barry, 9-0

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team put forward a valiant effort, but were unable to get the better of NCAA II Barry, falling 9-0 to the Lady Buccaneers on Sunday. The Eagles fall to 2-1 on the year, while Barry, the defending NCAA II national champion, notched its first win of the season.
 
The Eagles battled hard in doubles play, but were unable to come up with a win as Vojka Lukic and Linda Fritschken downed Yi Ching Chen and Josefine Strom at the top doubles spot, Olivia Matuszak and Julie Stas topped Kristina Marova and Paola Montero 8-1 at No. 3, and Sarah Krohnen and Cristina Valladares held off Ekaterina Kamendova and Rocio Frej Vitalle 8-4 at No. 2.
 
Chen played Lukic close in the first set but the Barry sophomore was able to hold off the ERAU senior for a 7-5, 6-1 win at the top spot. The match at No. 5 singles was also a hard-fought battle that went in favor of Barry as Stas topped Strom 6-3, 7-5.
 
 Frej Vitalle and Kamendova both lost their matches by 6-1, 6-2 margins at the second and third positions, respectively, with Kamendova falling to Wendling and Frej Vitalle falling to Linda Fritschken. Matuszak and Krohnen sealed the win for Barry as Matuszak topped Marova 6-2, 6-0 at No. 4 and Krohnen bested Montero 6-1, 6-1 at the sixth spot.
 
The Eagles are off until Feb. 16 when they host NCAA II No. 9 Rollins at Embry-Riddle's Crotty Tennis Complex.
