WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Thierno Agne registered a game-high 21 points to lead the top-ranked Northwood men's basketball team to an 82-59 win over Embry-Riddle in Sun Conference action on Thursday. The win improved the Seahawks' record to 25-2 overall and 12-1 in the league, while the Eagles fall to 15-11 on the year and even their league record at 6-6.
The Eagles were faced with adversity before the first tip as they discovered they would be without the services of starter
Jason Powell who was lost to a season-ending injury. ERAU struggled to shoot the ball in the first half, connecting on just eight of their 24 field goal attempts. On the other side of the ball, Northwood was 46.7 percent (14-of-30) from the field and used a 15-3 run to take a 12-point lead at the 14:11 mark of the first stanza. ERAU managed to close the gap to nine points, but Northwood, behind Agne's 14 first-half points, continued to widen the gap and led 39-21 at the break.
The early minutes of the second half saw the Seahawks maintain a lead between 18 and 20 points. At the 11:14 mark
Sam Ford rebounded a Tracy Parks miss and after racing back on offense, finished a pass from
DeForest Carter. That basket was the start of a 9-0 run that cut the Northwood lead to 11 (60-47) with 8:38 left to play.
On the next Northwood possession, the Seahawks got the ball to Masse Doumbe who knocked down one of his two three-pointers to halt the Eagle rally and trigger a 16-6 run that built the home team's cushion back up to 21 with four minutes remaining.
The Eagles were unable to stage another comeback, managing just one made field goal in the last 3:03, while Northwood scored four unanswered points down the stretch to seal the win.
Carter was the high scorer for the Eagles with 17 points and
Ray Graham added 10 points and nine rebounds in the Eagle effort.
The Eagles will be back on their home court in the ICI Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday to host Johnson & Wales in another Sun Conference contest.
