MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - For the first time all year, the sixth-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles dropped back-to-back games, falling 5-4 to the 12th-ranked St. Thomas Bobcats on Saturday evening. The Bobcats overcame a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the eighth inning to come away with the victory over ERAU, sending the Blue and Gold to it's second straight Sun Conference series loss for the first time since 2006. The Eagles drop to 33-13 overall and 17-6 in the conference while the Bobcats jump to 33-9 and 16-6.
The Eagles took an early 1-0 lead in the first when
Tyler Robbins came around to score on
Ian MacGeorge's single to left field.
Adam Paulencu kept the Eagles ahead for the first three frames, but STU struck for a pair of runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
Danny Sanchez, the Bobcats' starting pitcher, continued to shutdown the Eagle offense until the top of the eighth when ERAU got three runs to take a 4-2 lead. Two of the three runs scored on an error by the STU shortstop.
Looking for a shutdown inning, Paulencu took the mound for the bottom of the eighth frame, but again an Eagle error doomed the visitors as three Bobcats came around to score three unearned runs to retake the lead, 5-4.
Embry-Riddle put one runner aboard in the top of the ninth in
Greg Smith, but Smith was thrown out at second trying to steal, ending the game in favor of STU.
The Eagles and Bobcats will conclude their series tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 15 at 11 a.m.
