DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team secured a spot in the championship match of the 2012 Sun Conference tournament with a 5-0 semifinal win over Webber International, Friday at Embry-Riddle's Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles, ranked second in the NAIA, are the tournament's No. 1 seed and will go into Saturday's title match with a 19-3 overall record. Fourth-seeded WIU moves to 14-10 with the loss.
Doubles play saw
Kristina Marova and
Paola Montero top Jeanette Hicks and Holly Parnell at No. 3 doubles.
Ekaterina Kamendova and
Rocio Frej Vitalle won by the same margin over Nathalia Chaddad and Leticia Tomb at the second spot and
Yi Ching Chen and
Josefine Strom closed out doubles play with an 8-4 decision against Laura Nowak and Julija Stojkovska at No. 1 to put the Eagles up 3-0 heading into singles play.
The first singles match to reach completion was at the No. 3 spot where Kamendova topped Stojkovska 6-0, 6-0. The next match off the court was at the third position where Marova scored the clincher with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tomb.
The Eagles will play the winner of Friday's second semifinal between SCAD Savannah and St. Thomas on Saturday morning.
