GUANAJUATO, Mexico – On Saturday,
Nicole Bonk competed at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Islands (NACAC) Under-23 Championships, representing the United States in the 10000m Race Walk. Bonk performed well for her country, bringing home a bronze medal in the event.
Bonk, who only began race walking competitively last year, clocked in a time of 55:56.68. She finished just over three minutes behind gold medal winner Maria Irais R. Mena from Mexico, who recorded a time of 52:52.54. Fellow American Rachael Tylock from NCAA II Mansfield University (Penn.) won the silver medal in 53:16.59.
Bonk's bronze medal contributed to the USA's overall dominance of the competition; the United States accumulated 69 medals (32 gold, 26 silver, 11 bronze) to finish well ahead in the medal count. Mexico took second with 19 medals (5 gold, 3 silver, 11 bronze) while Canada came in third with 18 medals (4 gold, 6 silver, 8 bronze). Other countries represented at the NACAC U-23 Championships included the Bahamas, Jamaica, Barbados, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Trinidad & Tobago, the Dominican Republic, and the Virgin Islands.
