BABSON PARK, Fla. - Despite a career-high 28 points from
Cesar Pastrana, the Embry-Riddle Eagles found themselves on the wrong side of a 70-63 final score in Babson Park on Tuesday evening. The Eagles fell on the road to Webber International in a game they led by as many as 14 points in the second half. Embry-Riddle drops its third consecutive contest and sits at 16-4 overall and 3-3 in The Sun Conference while the Warriors notch their second straight win over a top-10 team and move to 10-7 and 5-2.
The Eagles faced a hostile environment in the Warriors' gym as more than 400 fans packed the Sabbagh Ahletic Center, the vast majority wearing green in support of the hosts. Embry-Riddle jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a pair of Pastrana free throws, but WIU quickly answered with an 18-4 run to go up 20-11 when Tyler Auerbacher hit a jumper with 11:14 left in the half.
The Eagles turned up the defensive intensity over the next few minutes and held the Warriors scoreless for over seven minutes of action, outscoring Webber International 13-0 to take a 24-20 advantage.
After the warriors tied the score at 24-24, the Eagles ended the frame on a 6-3 run to take a three-point lead into the break, 30-27.
Unlike the previous two contests, the Eagles came out of the lockerroom firing on all cylinders, increasing their advantage to 10 on a Pastrana jumper at the 16:36 mark. The Warriors cut the deficit to eight on a Brian Pace two-pointer, but the Eagles took their biggest lead of the night at 47-33 when
DeForest Carter found Pastrana under the hoop for an easy layup with 11:35 left to go in the game.
Pace brought his team back over the next six minutes, scoring 23 of his 27 points in the second half, including 11 over that time period. Jakeem Hill tied the game at 49-49 with a fast break layup as the Eagles were in the midst of a nearly-five minute scoreless draught.
Embry-Riddle was able to go back up by six when Pastrana made another layup at the 4:06 mark, but the Webber crowd got behind their team and erupted when Pace hit a three to put his team up by two, 59-57 with just over two minutes remaining.
The Warriors never allowed the Eagles back into it, answering with baskets every time the Eagles were able to get one of their own.
Pace had 27 for the Warriors while Auerbacher had 17 and Hill added 10.
Pastrana picked up a double-double with a team season-high 28 points and 11 rebounds, Carter had 12 points and 10 assists in a losing effort.
Embry-Riddle finished just 1-for-15 from long range while the Warriors made six three-pointers.
