AT A GLANCE
A NAIA top-25 doubleheader kicks off the 2013 season for both the No. 7 Eagles and No. 20 Tigers on Friday. Both teams posted over 40 wins a season ago while advancing to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round with Embry-Riddle qualifying for the 2012 Avista-NAIA World Serie for the fifth consecutive season (11th in program history). Each team features NAIA Preseason All-American pitchers in ERAU's Maloney and Georgetown's Tyler Arthur and Chad Richie.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
While the pitchers may have the accolades, the hitters for both teams will likely decide the winners of the three games these two squads are slated to play over the weekend. The Tigers return a big chunk of their lineup from 2012, an offense that doubled the run output of their opponents.
SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
Under the direction of second-year Head Coach Micah Baumfield, the Tigers, who achived a top-25 national ranking for the first time ever last year, begins the 2013 season at No. 20 in the coaches' poll. Georgetown won the Mid-South tournament, but went 0-2 at the NAIA Opening Round, finishing the season 45-11 overall.
Arthur was the Tigers' ace last season as a freshman, posting a 10-1 record in 14 appearances with a 1.68 ERA en route to Mid-South Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors. Arthur was named a second team All-American in 2012 and will look to repeat as an All-American as a sophomore.
Returning hitters for the Tigers include David Higuera (.349 BA, 28 RBIs, 51 H), Mike Steinke (.339 BA, 23 RBIs, 41 H) and Jordan Hinshaw (.331 BA, 24 RBIs, 6 HRs). As a team, Georgetown hit .310 and slugged .421, drawing 202 walks to 278 strikeouts.
LAST GAME: Sand Sharks End Eagles' Season with 7-2 Victory at World Series (May 26, 2012)
LEWISTON, Idaho – The Embry-Riddle Eagles and South Carolina Beaufort Sand Sharks traveled an average of 2,700 miles to play in the 2012 Avista-NAIA World Series; little did they know they would be facing each other for the fifth time this season. With the season series tied at 2-2, the rubber match on Saturday morning at Lewis-Clark State's Harris Field proved to be the most crucial game of 2012 for both teams. The Sand Sharks took advantage of five Eagle errors and came away with a 7-2 victory, eliminating ERAU and ending Embry-Riddle's season.
The second game of the Eagles' World Series started much like their first game as USCB sent eight batters to the dish in the first frame, starting by putting runners on first and second with no outs before a double steal advanced the runners. Eaton struck out Dylan Nasiatka before Ty Main drilled a single back up the middle to score one and Conald Mansfield added two more with an RBI hit to center to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Sand Sharks. Three Eagle errors aided USCB in the first inning, a familiar theme for ERAU after their six miscues on Friday.
OPENERS
Embry-Riddle is 19-5 all-time in season openers and 18-6 in home openers (11-1 in home openers at Sliwa Stadium). The last time the Eagles' lost a home opener was 2006 against Brewton-Parker when the Barons exploded for 16 runs in a 16-5 victory.
In the Eagles' first-ever game they defeated Washington & Lee, 10-4 in the first win in Embry-Riddle Athletic Department history on Feb. 15, 1989.
The most common season opening opponents for the Blue and Gold have been Bethune-Cookman (ERAU leads 4-0), Brewton-Parker (ERAU leads 5-2) and North Georgia (ERAU leads 5-0).
ALL-TIME SERIES
Embry-Riddle is 2-0 against the Tigers with both games coming during the Greg Guilliams' era. Embry-Riddle got a fantastic pitching performance from Chris Maloney on Mar. 10, 2007 as he threw the fourth and to-date, last, no-hitter in ERAU history against the visiting Tigers. Steven Howard went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the Eagles' 3-0 victory.
On Mar. 15, 2005, Embry-Riddle pounded out 15 hits and 10 runs in a mercy-rule shortened 10-0 win over Georgetown at Sliwa Stadium (then University Ballpark). Josh Smith and Jonathan Holt combined to throw a two-hit shutout of the Tigers while six Eagles collected two hits each and Smith, the winning pitcher, recorded a pair of RBIs.
300 WINS OR 400 LOSSES
One of two things will happen on Friday: either the Eagles give Head Coach Randy Stegall his 300th career win or the Tigers hand the Eagles their 400th loss in program history. Stegall is 298-124-2 all-time as a head coach spanning seven seasons, and the Blue and Gold program is 927-399-1 in 24 years of existence.
MALONEY ON THE MOUND
Kevin Maloney is 19-0 in a two-year Eagle career, posting a career 2.62 ERA in 26 appearances. When the Dunedin, Fla. native pitches the Eagles are 24-2 in 26 games.
NEXT TO 150
There are 17 members of the Embry-Riddle 150-Hit Club...with 29 hits in his senior season, Tyler Robbins can become the 18th member. Hailing from Port Orange, Fla., Robbins has 121 hits in three seasons with a .306 average from the plate and is fourth in Eagle history with 82 walks.
QUARTER CENTURY OF EAGLE BASEBALL
The 2013 season marks the 25th edition of Eagle baseball and Embry-Riddle athletics overall. The basketball, baseball, men's tennis and men's golf programs began in the 1988-89 academic year and were the foundation the rest of the department was built upon.
Embry-Riddle is 927-399-1 in 24 seasons, capturing 13 conference regular season titles, four conference tournament titles, seven regional crowns, claiming 28 NAIA All-America honors, 35 Honorable Mention All-American honors and advancing to the NAIA World Series 11 times (T-4th most in NAIA history).
