AT A GLANCE
The NAIA II No. 4 Eagles travel south to take on Johnson & Wales in the first conference game of the 2013 calendar year. Embry-Riddle, winners of 13 conseuctive contests, will be putting their 15-1 overall and 2-0 league record on the line against a Wildcats' team that won the last meeting between the two teams a year ago.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Eagles have proven themselves to be one of the most balanced teams in the country, boasting eight different leading scorers in the first 16 games of the 2012-13 season. However, the Eagles are coming off one of their poorer offensive performances against Voorhees in the Bahama House Classic championship game, and despite winning the game easily (68-44), Embry-Riddle shot just 33 percent in the second half and only 27 percent from beyond the arc in the game.
SCOUTING JOHNSON & WALES
JWU Head Coach David Graham has his team coming off one of the best seasons in program history, despite just an 11-16 overall record. The Wildcats are 9-6 so far in 2012-13 and have a 1-2 mark in Sun Conference play, dropping games against Northwood and Ave Maria before topping Warner in Lake Wales on Dec. 5.
Myles Smith ranks second in the conference with a 19.5 points per game average and has scored at least 20 on eight separate occasions, including two contests of 30. Luke Walters and Qunetin Tate are both in double-figures in scoring, averaging 14.1 and 12.6 respectively.
Opponents average 44 percent from the field against the Wildcats and just 31 percent from long range. Like many teams in The Sun Conference, JWU ranks in the top-10 nationally in assists per game, dishing out nearly 19 per contest.
LAST GAME: Embry-Riddle Finishes Non-Conference Slate with Bahama House Classic Title
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The NAIA II No. 4 Embry-Riddle Eagles wrapped up the non-conference portion of their 2012-13 season slate on Thursday night in the Bahama House Classic title game, defeating Voorhees 68-44 to capture the tournament crown and their 13th consecutive victory. Embry-Riddle, now 15-1 overall, will turn its focus towards the remainder of The Sun Conference schedule which begins on Saturday in North Miami, Fla.
STREAKING
After Thursday's victory over Voorhees, the Eagles hold a 13-game winning streak, the fourth-longest such streak in program history. Embry-Riddle has twice won 20 consecutive games, once spanning two seasons (Feb. 22, 2000 - Dec, 7, 2000), and the other all in one athletic year (Nov. 19, 2005 - Jan. 28, 2006). The Blue and Gold has also put together win streaks of 15 (Nov. 21, 2008 - Jan. 21, 2009), 14 (Nov. 27, 2009 - Jan. 22, 2010 and Dec. 19, 2000 - Feb. 1, 2001) and 13 (Nov. 2, 2007 - Jan. 1, 2008).
NORTH MIAMI FEELS LIKE HOME
The Eagles have never lost on the road against Johnson & Wales, going 6-0 against the Wildcats. The all-time series is 18-2 in favor of the Blue and Gold, but both JWU victories have come at the ICI Center, including last year's 104-102 overtime win.
ON THE ROAD...WHO KNOWS?
Despite a very impressive record, the fourth-ranked Eagles have only played one true road game: Nov. 17 at Carroll in Helena, Mont. Embry-Riddle won a pair of neutral site contests against Montana Tech (Nov. 16) and DeVry (Dec. 3), but Saturday's game will be just the second road game for the Eagles in 2012-13.
TURNOVER TROUBLE
Embry-Riddle would like to see its turnover numbers go down significantly as Sun Conference play begins in earnest. The Eagles average 16.4 turnovers per contest, two more than their opponents and over the last four games have turned the ball over nearly 19 times a game.
NOT QUITE 100
Embry-Riddle has yet to score 100 points in the first 16 games of 2012-13, the longest streak to open a season since Steve Ridder's first season at the helm of the program in 1989-90 when the Eagles didn't reach the century mark until the 20th game of the year. The only season in which Embry-Riddle did not score 100 points in a game was the inaugural season of 1988-89 when the highest Eagle point total was 87.
The Eagles have scored triple digits three times against Johnson & Wales (Nov. 21, 2000 - 101, Jan. 6, 2008 - 109, Feb. 11, 2012 - 102).
PLAYER TO WATCH
DeForest Carter was recently featured as one of 13 local collegiate athletes to watch in 2013 by the Daytona Beach News-Journal. He joined three other Eagle student-athletes from around the athletic department. The article can be found HERE.
QUARTER CENTURY OF EAGLE BASKETBALL
The 2012-13 season marks the 25th edition of Eagle basketball and Embry-Riddle athletics overall. The basketball, baseball, men's tennis and men's golf programs began in the 1988-89 academic year and were the foundation the rest of the department was built upon.
Embry-Riddle is 570-235 in 25 seasons, capturing eight conference regular season titles, nine conference tournament titles, claiming 17 NAIA All-America honors, 15 Honorable Mention All-American honors and reaching the pinnacle of NAIA basketball in 2000 when the Eagles won the NAIA II National Championship.
