Bluffton, S.C. – The No. 2 Embry-Riddle women's soccer team rounded out its weekend road trip with a 1-0 win at the University of South Carolina Beaufort Sunday afternoon at Fin Land Field in Bluffton, S.C.
The lone goal of the game came in the 41
st minute, when
Valerie Obita raced past the USCB defenders and sent the ball flying from the right side right in front of the goal where
Isabelle Haaranen was waiting. Haaranen shot the ball in the upper-left hand corner right past the reach of the USCB keeper Chelsie Mummert, to give the Eagles the one goal advantage.
The first half of the game was very one sided, with the Eagle back line hardly having to cross the halfway point. The Eagles were unable to capitalize however, with eight shots total in the first half and five on frame. Mummert recorded four saves in the first half, limiting the Eagles to only one goal.
The Sand Sharks were only able to get one shot in the first period, in the ninth minute, when Jessica Tooley sent a ball high and wide of the goal.
The second half was more of the same, as the Eagles held the Sand Sharks pinned to their side of the pitch the majority of the time.
In the first few minutes of the second half the Sand Sharks came out firing, with two free kicks by Megan Benoist on frame, but
Olivia Lynch was there for the saves. The Eagles had a perfect scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute when Haaranen had a breakaway down the right side for a one-on-one opportunity with Mummert, she shot the ball hard but the keeper was there to block it but dropped the ball, Haaranen tried to get another shot on frame but Mummert jumped on the ball right in time for another save.
Embry-Riddle had eight opportunities for corner kicks in the second half alone but were unable to capitalize; the Sand Sharks had a tremendous defensive effort clearing the ball every time.
Rebekka Gisladottir was able to put her head on the ball after one of the
Katherine Ebbs corners; unfortunately Mummert was all over the net and got the save.
The Sand Sharks backline had a very impressive outing, as did the goalie Mummert.
"There's no sugar-coating today - we were not good!" ERAU Head Coach
Samantha Bohon said. "Our first touch was really off; our final pass wasn't accurate; our physicality wasn't good enough and we just couldn't get a rhythm for long stretches today. How do we create 15 corners and not get something from them? Now, we have to give credit to USCB's back line and goalkeeper who played tremendously. They played a big part in why it was a one-goal game. But, we have to be much better - PERIOD! There's not much more I can say."
ERAU outshot USCB 17 -5, including an 11-3 advantage in shots on frame. USCBs' Mummert ended the game with an outstanding 10 saves. With the win the Eagles improve to 4-0 in The Sun Conference while the Sand Sharks fall to 1-3 in conference play.
Up next for ERAU women's soccer is a home contest against No. 5 ranked Northwood on Friday Oct. 11th at 6 p.m. at ERAU Soccer Stadium.
