DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The NAIA No. 3 Embry-Riddle Eagles improved to 8-0 on the season with a 106-79 victory over visiting Florida College on Saturday night. The Blue and Gold used 53-percent shooting from the floor and 46-percent shooting from long range to outpace the Falcons (6-8) en route to the Eagles' first triple-digit scoring output since Feb. 11, 2012. Embry-Riddle got a career-high 23 points from senior
Rico Saldana and 18 and 17 points respectively from
Dalton Barnes and
DeForest Carter.
Embry-Riddle opened the scoring with a layup from
Cesar Pastrana, but the Falcons kept up with the Eagles' scoring pace through the first nine minutes of action, taking a 20-17 lead when Sir Reynolds hit a trey at the 11:37 mark.
Embry-Riddle would regain the lead, but a Daniel Frankling layup at the nine-minute mark cut the ERAU lead to 25-24. From that point forward the Eagles went on a 25-10 spurt to take a 50-34 lead into the break. Most of the Eagles' points came in the paint over the remaining nine minutes of the period, led by Saldana, and when Carter was fouled on a three-point attempt with a little over four minutes remaining, the junior connected on all three of his free throws to put the Eagles up 35-28.
Barnes ended the half scoring the final seven for Embry-Riddle, including an and-one fastbreak lay-in and another fastbreak layup off a feed from
Reed Ridder that accounted for the final points of the period.
Trailing by 15, the Falcons battled back in the opening moments of the second half, scoring four straight and going on a 11-4 run to cut the lead to eight, but the Blue and Gold answered as Barnes hit a triple and Pastrana registered a layup as the Eagles grew their lead back to double-digits.
A Barnes three-pointer and a Saldana tip-in kept the Eagles in front by a comfortable margin and when Saldana again recorded a layup with 13 minutes left in the half, Embry-Riddle found itself up 74-58.
Back-to-back layups from Barnes and Saldana pushed the Eagles up by 17 at the 11:14 mark and a Carter three a few moments later ballooned the advantage to 22.
The Falcons would get no closer than 16 the rest of the way as every Eagle that played recorded a point, including an
Andy Schleitwiler triple that gave the Eagles' their biggest lead of the night at 106-76 before a trey from FC accounted for the final score.
Saldana's 23 points led all scorers along with AJ Williams' 23 for FC.
Brandon Serle grabbed a game-high eight boards and
Jason Powell paced the Eagles with nine assists and five steals as the Eagles collected 26 assists as a team and forced 17 Falcon turnovers.
The Eagles travel to Babson Park, Fla. next Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. to open up Sun Conference play against Webber International.
