Chris Freeman and J.R. Leonik earned an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The top-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling 7-2 to NCAA II No. 4 Barry at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles, now 3-1 on the year, won two of the three doubles points, but the Bucanneers swept singles play to improve their overall record to 2-0.

The first doubles match off the court was at No. 3 doubles where Simon Felix and Kevin Chaouat bested Renato Lombardi and Max Wimmer 9-7. At the second doubles spot, ninth-ranked Chris Freeman and J.R. Leonik fell behind early, 4-1 to Barry's Romain Costamagna and Ollie Lemaitre. The ERAU duo rallied to win seven straight games and turned in an 8-4 victory to make the team score 2-0 in favor of the Blue and Gold.

The doubles match on court one took an hour and 12 minutes to reach completion. Both the ERAU tandem of Patrick Besch and Deni Zmak, and Barry's second-ranked team of Marco Mokrzycki and Fabian Greotsch held serve through the first 16 games, forcing a tiebreaker. The Barry pair jumped ahead 2-0 and held on for a 7-3 tiebreak win to give the Bucs their first team point of the match.

Playing his first singles match of the spring season, Besch suffered a 6-3, 6-4 loss to seventh-ranked Mokrzycki at the top spot. The next match off the court was at No. 2 singles where Groetsch held off Zmak 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) to give Barry a 3-2 lead. Barry picked up its fourth point when Leo Vivas topped Miguel Lopez Gomez 6-4, 6-4 on court six.

The final three matches all went to three sets. At No. 3 singles, Freeman dropped the first set 6-2, but bounced back to top Lombardi 6-3 in the second. Freeman held an early advantage in the third, but Lombardi broke and then held serve to take the match 6-4.

The contest at No. 3 singles saw the first set last more than an hour. After being edged out by Wimmer 7-6 (9-7) in the first set, Felix came back to take the second 6-3, but Wimmer emerged with the win, besting Felix 10-5 in the final frame.

Freshman Anthony Grasso also suffered a first-set (6-2) loss, but forced an extra frame with a 6-4 win over Costamagna in the second.  Grasso went up 5-4 in the third, but Costamagna rallied to win three games in a row to complete the Buccaneer sweep 7-5.

The Eagles return to Sun Conference play on Wednesday when they host Northwood at the Crotty Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m.
