LAKE WALES, Fla. - The 16th-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles played their second overtime game in three contests, finding themselves the victims of a last-second three-pointer by Warner's Bryce Kachinski on Wednesday night in the Turner Athletic Center. Kachinski's trey gave the hosts a 79-77 upset victory on their senior night, dropping the Blue and Gold to 22-8 overall and 9-7 in The Sun Conference. Warner moves to 18-12 and 7-9, setting up a quick rematch between the two squads on Saturday in the first round of The Sun Conference Tournament. Embry-Riddle finished in a three-way tie for third place with St. Thomas and Ave Maria, but thanks to the Eagles early-season win over regular season champion Northwood, the Eagles claim the third seed in the nine-team event and will host the Royals in one of four quarterfinals on Saturday.
Kachinski's three capped a 5-0 run for the Royals to end the overtime period after the Eagles went up by three on a
Jeremiah Applin trey with 1:50 left in the extra frame. A dunk from Mark. St. Fort cut the lead to 77-76 with 90 second remaining, but an Eagle turnover gave the ball back to Warner with under 28 seconds on the clock.
St. Fort missed a jumper with four seconds left, but a tip-out on the offensive rebound found the hands of Kachinski who nailed his sixth three-pointer of the game to account for the 79-77 final.
The game was tightly contested throughout regulation with neither team holding more than a nine-point lead. Embry-Riddle held a 33-28 advantage at the break, getting nine points from
Cesar Pastrana in the opening half.
The Eagles grew their lead to nine when
Jason Powell made a trey with just over 17 minutes left in regulation. However, the Royals were able to trim the deficit to just two points with 11:04 remaining when St. Fort converted a layup.
Neither team could pull away from that point as the two squads matched each other shot for shot. The Eagles held a 69-67 lead when
DeForest Carter made a free throw with 26 seconds on the clock, but St. Fort answered with a pair from the charity stripe to knot the game with 13 seconds left.
Embry-Riddle's shot at the buzzer was offline and the teams advanced into overtime for the third (ERAU) and first (WU) times in 2012-13.
Warner scored first in OT, but the Eagles then went on an 8-2 run to hold a three-point lead on Applin's trey, but the Royals scored the final five points in the game to send the Eagles to their seventh loss in conference play and eighth loss overall.
The Eagles were led by Pastrana's 18 points and eight rebounds while Powell added 16 points and seven boards and Carter fell just one rebound and two assists shy of a triple-double with 11 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Applin came off the bench to give ERAU three treys in an 11-point outing.
The Eagles and Royals' quarterfinal matchup is slated for 7 p.m. on Saturday in the ICI Center.
