Blue and Gold Improves to 21-3 with Sunday Sweep of Tigers

Jeff Lemon finished the day 4-for-5 with a pair of RBIs and four runs scored.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The seventh-ranked Embry-Riddle baseball team extended its winning streak to 11 games on Sunday, tying the best start since 2005 with a twin bill sweep of visiting Edward Waters, 9-4 and 5-2. The Eagles (21-3) posted two come-from-behind victories over the Tigers, becoming the seventh NAIA school to reach the 20-win plateau in 2013. The Blue and Gold will take three days off before hosting Indiana Tech on Thursday for a 6 p.m. contest at Sliwa Stadium.

Game 1
Embry-Riddle faced deficits of 3-0 and 4-2 in the day's opener, but managed to score seven unanswered runs at the tail end of the game to emerge with a 9-4 win over EWC. Chad Modomo surrendered four runs on just five hits, but struck out five in five innings of work, earning his third victory of the season for the Eagles. The ERAU bats came alive late and were aided by four Tiger errors in the fifth and sixth innings.

Modomo got off to a rocky start, walking the Tigers' leadoff batter Steven Brock before two straight base hits from JaJuan Lee and Travonne Fuller gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. Neil Martino brought in Lee with a groundout before Fuller, who had moved to third on the previous play, scored on Modomo's wild pitch, bringing the score to 3-0 in favor of EWC. Modomo settled down and retired the final two Tiger batters, sending his team to the plate.

Tyler Robbins got things started for the Blue and Gold in the bottom of the first, drawing a leadoff walk before moving to second on Jordan Johnson's groundout. Jeff Lemon took a Trent Pettit pitch deep to center for a one-out triple, scoring Robbins for the first Eagle run of the afternoon. When Kevin Lindheim flew out to center, Lemon tagged to draw a throw from the center fielder who airmailed both the catcher and Pettit who was backing the catcher up, allowing Lemon to score and cut the Tiger lead to 3-2.

Modomo went to work in the second, striking out Brock to end the frame in the midst of retiring 11 straight batters until Thomas Willits, Jr. started the fifth with a single to right. A single and sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out and Fuller recorded his second RBI of the day with a single through the infield to push the Tiger lead to 4-2. Modomo got out of the inning by inducing a ground ball from Martino to end the threat.

The Eagles continued their trend of fifth-inning scoring in the home-half of the frame, starting when Lindheim plated both Johnson and Robbins on a single to center, knotting the game at 4-4. After Matt Jacobs reached first on a hit by pitch, Adam Cellini doubled to right center to bring in a pair of runs and give the Eagles a 6-4 lead, their first of the day.

Eric Green entered the game for Modomo in the sixth, going three-up, three-down to send his team back to the plate where they scored three more runs to extend the lead to 9-4. Lemon singled in Johnson on a base hit to left and when the outfielder failed to pick up the ball, Robbins crossed the plate for an 8-4 advantage. Lindheim later doubled home Lemon to account for the 9-4 final.

Andrew Lytle, making his first appearance in 2013, relieved Green in the ninth and secured the victory with a flyout and two groundouts.

Pettit (1-3) was tagged with the loss, throwing all six innings for EWC, allowing nine runs (four earned) on nine hits.

Modomo (3-1) tossed five frames of five-hit baseball, fanning five. Green and Lytle both had perfect one-inning outings.

Johnson, Lemon, Lindheim and Cellini all collected two hits with Lindheim (3), Lemon (2) and Cellini (2) recording all seven of the Eagles' RBIs.

Game 2
The second game of the doubleheader started much like the first for the Tigers as they took an early 1-0 lead off of Eagle starter Brian Johnson. However, the junior from Casselberry, Fla. got three runs in the bottom of the frame and he, along with Green and Ronnie Lozada, made them stand up as the Eagles completed the sweep with a 5-2 win.

Clint Horvath singled in Brock in the top of the first after an error allowed the Tiger shortstop to reach base safely, accounting for a 1-0 lead for Edward Waters.

Embry-Riddle answered in the bottom of the inning, wasting no time to touch up Tiger starter Bryan Waller for a trio of runs in the frame. Jordan Johnson and Lemon collected one-out base knocks before Lindheim scored Johnson on a single to right field. Kyle Chastain pushed across the go-ahead run with a double to right center before Lindheim touched home on Liam Goodall's sacrifice fly later in the inning, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Eagles.

Johnson pitched perfect second and third innings before the Tigers trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the fourth on a Rey Otero double that scored Horvath. Johnson also faced trouble in the fifth when EWC loaded the bases, but the Eagle right-hander managed to get out of the frame without any damage by striking out Austin Marzolph on a 3-2 pitch.

The Blue and Gold chipped on an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Chastain singled to left, scoring Lemon, stretching the lead to 4-2.

Green once again entered in relief with a runner on first in the sixth, and struck out the two batters he faced to strand the runner on the bases and extend his scoreless inning streak to 6.2 over his last five appearances.

Chastain continued his near-perfect game with a single in the sixth, bringing in Lemon's pinch runner, David Belardes.

Lozada earned his fourth save of the season with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout in the seventh, securing the win for Johnson and the Eagles.

Brian Johnson (4-0) tossed 5.1 innings, scattering five hits, allowing two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts. Green and Lozada pitched a hit-less sixth and seventh inning respectively.

Chastain finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, Lemon was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Lindheim was 1-for-2 with an RBI, a run and two walks.
